Running Game

For you gurus out there...

What seems to be the problem? Is it that we have a different style of play, Greg Davis or what.

Why don't good running back want to come to play at TEXAS? Is it Major being the coach and them thinking he is not good enough.

Just wondering why a 5 star running back would not commit to TEXAS after Ricky, Cedric, etc.

Predictability in the scheme is the chief reason for struggles in the running game. We run the zone play far more often than we should, and that allows teams to beat the running game by simple alignment changes and slanting to the zone side.

But even when we don't run the zone, there's a second problem. The right guard always ends up on the play side of the runs, with one real exception. Defenses that do an excellent job in stopping our run game in general emphasize reading the right guard more than anyone else. On that counter trey play that we run, the RG either pulls and the RB follows if the play is to the left, or he blocks down when it's to the right. Of course the OL moves in uniformity on the zone, so that's not worth discussing, and neither is the speed option. The only run we use that this isn't completely true is that wagon train sweep when we run it to the left, but that's extremely rare. And of course when the RG shows pass pro by dropping on the first step, the D reads pass. The point is that we never move away from the right guard and we give defenses a good idea of what's about to happen just by reading what he does on the first step. That's a serious problem.

Didn't Mack Brown say they were going to work on fixing the running game this off-season? In fact, hasn't he said that for the last 5 or 6 years??

The Colts were the second worst rushing team in the NFL this year. Only San Diego was behind them. The Saints rushed for 51 yards in the Super Bowl win.

But the Colts have Manning and the Saints have Brees (led the NFL in QB rating). Look, I'm not saying Colt McCoy is Manning or Brees or will have the NFL careers they have had so do not misinterpret this. But when you have Colt McCoy as your QB you can win some games without good rushing numbers. In fact, you can put yourself in contention for the MNC 2 years in a row.

I think a strong running game would have been a luxury in 08 and 09 but it wasn't a necessity. In 2010, it will be more important and the play calling and emphasis will most likely reflect that. Hopefully the results will follow.

We run a variation of the Tech offense under Leach. He doesn't care about his running game. Neither do our coaches.
When you have the most accurate passer in college football, its easier to throw for 5 yards than run for 5 yards.

The sooner everyone realizes this, the better off you will be. Running is a distant second option in this offense. Thats why we just signed 6 WRs, 2 QBs and 1 RB.
