running game

Just curious how good can our running game be this year.. Our returning backs showed promise in limited play but as far as shouldering the full load remains to be seen.. And our incoming backs? Like to hear some responses from some with a bit more insight..

Overall, we'll have more experience and depth in the OL, which is the most important part to having a successful run game. We'll see alot of McGee and Ogbonnaya. I'm excited to see what McGee can do, I'm optimistic.

I personally think that McGee can be a STAR for the Longhorns. He was awesome in HS against good competition and he's put on muscle mass here at Texas.... I'm pulling for a breakout year.

We might be a bit surprised by Fozzy Whitaker... dude has some RT in his game (minus the giant brick of stank, hopefully).

I like OB, but he's not a D1 starting or 50% of the touches type talent. Thank God he's willing to work his butt off to try to get some touches, but IMO, he's a black Brent Robins (Bless his heart)

Our running game will be as good as the offensive line lets it. I doubt we'll be, as Coach Royal called it, a "rolling ball of butcher knives"...but hopefully we'll get enough of a running threat to keep defenses kinda honest against Colt. A better defense getting us better field position can't hurt either.

The latest Sporting News is touting Tre Newton
going so far as saying that as an early enrollee
he would be first team even if Scott had signed with us.. According to the column it's between McGee and Newton. I always take what's said in national publications with a grain of salt as it's usually third hand info.

I'm excited about Tre Newton also, but I don't see how anyone can say that an incoming/unproven freshman is a leading candidate to be on the first team. Unless, of course, Tre is *that* superb and/or Mack is trying to make a "this coulda been you" statement re a certain RB who elected to sign with a team up north.

Brent Robins would look good running the zone read with Justin Chiles, but not as good as Selmon Young or Jamarcus Charles would.

I believe it was Mack that said last month that they like having a 3rd down back as a specialist that they bring in, so that the 1st and 2nd down back doesn't have to worry about things like the extra protect schemes. He said they plan to do it next season, too.

So I am expecting that Obannaya will likely continue to be the third down back, leaving McGee and Fozzy competing for the starting job. Both of them looked very good in the first two practices, not that running in pads means anything. I'm looking forward to seeing them in the spring game.

I have no expectations for Newton and Hills, since they have a long way to go just learning the offense, Cody too.

We'll see more of a committee like we did in 2006, but with expanded roles for the backup QB and tailbacks.

McGee = primary threat, especially on Chiles options or when everyone bites on him and leaves Colt to do his rollouts.

Fozzy = takes over McGee's role from last year... gets a couple of looks each game with a few broken for TDs or short yardage ones.

Ogbonnaya = same deal, especially with the rollouts on short yardage and pounding out a couple first downs

I think Fozzy is gonna be a good player this year. He is explosive and I think he will give us a big play threat. Vondrell will be solid but nothing amazing. He will get 1000 yds and average about 5 yds a carry I think.
