Rule on Ball Coming Back out of Basket??

The Aggy dunk appeared to me to pass below the rim and strangely be caught by the net and pulled back out. That had to be so disheartening for the Ags.

Bobby Knight did not know the rule. Does anyone out there know if the basket should have counted since it passed completely through the rim?

I saw it happen last week, too. I can't recall which game. Was it Celtics-Lakers?

The rule is that the ball has to go through the nylon to count as a basket. I'm surprised Coach Knight didn't know that. I actually heard about this rule about a year or two ago during a game on TV. The color guy explained it very clearly when it happened then.

It seems to happen more often than you'd think because it was my third time seeing it, and second time in a week.

I laughed.

If aggy hadn't hung on the rim for emphasis, the rim wouldn't have snapped back and the ball wouldn't have shot back out.

Poor aggy.

As long as Bobby Knight has been in basketball he should be ashamed not to know the answer to the question. Of course there are so many other things he should be ashamed of that I guess he just forgot this one.

ditto on coach knight not knowing the rule on what constitutes a made basket. i'm sure he's forgotten more about the game that we'll ever know, but that seems to be a fundamental rule (and the point of the game--putting the ball in the hoop).

So does the rim constitute the basket or does the net?

Given the "no basket" call it would seem the net represents "the basket" identified in the rule, and that passing through the rim is not relevant.

Correct?
