Ruidoso- no downhill skiing

My wife and I are going to Ruidoso over Christmas, but unfortunately she hurt her neck pretty badly so downhill skiing is out for her.

Any recommendations for other activities? We both love the outdoors and are open to trying pretty much anything.

Yeah, we're locked in at this point. The plane tickets have already been bought and reservations have already been made. Since we're both grad students, it would probably be too expensive to back out and make new travel plans this close to christmas.

Gamble at Inn of the Mountain Gods, although from experience and second hand accounts, the Mescaleros can be downright ********. They also have golfing and a lounge there. They might even have a show or concert at their venue.

Hiking would also be pretty cool up there around that time. Take a picnic if you think you won't freeze your asses off in the wilderness. I've been on several trails there, but i can't remember any of the trailhead names. I'm sure you could Google them.

go snowshoeing or XC skiing. try to find a local hut/yurt system you could as use in place of tents for a 2-3 day trip.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Ank-- Do you what kind of stores (if any) might rent snowshoes? None of the ski shops I contacted rent snowshoes or cross country skis.

The Link

according to the link, the REI in Albuquerque rents XC equipment and snowhoes. also I'd ask at the local shop(s) that's equally as oriented towards selling outdoors gear year around (might not be just a ski shop) because they'll have the gear in the first place, rather than ones that focus almost exclusively on seasonal ski rentals, who most likely just have resort-focused rental stock.

No Xcountry there that I know of. The snow has sucked anyhow. As warm as it's been, you can fly fish in the local lakes.

Actually, I've snowshoed in/near Cloudcroft before. It was about ten years ago; I didn't rent as I own my own pair. But yeah, snow in southern New Mexico is extremely iffy.

There are chunks of Lincoln National Forest all around there; I'm afraid development has taken place all around there since I've spent much time there, but that may give you a place to start looking.
