Does anyone know the inside scoop on what the umps and Augie discussed when Ruffin was tossed? It can't possibly take 5 minutes and 3 different conversations to say "I think he's throwing at the batter's head"; "No, he isn't."
All I know is that I have a favorite new player. It's fairly obvious he was heavily coached by someone who threw in the bigs. Probably his Dad, but if not, someone else who played.
That was major league pitching ettiquette if I've ever seen it.
1st incident, a player from KU stepped into one. So obvious that the plate ump called him back to the plate. Next pitch, towards the earhole, basic etiquettem "you wanna step into one, step into this one". No warning issued.
2nd incident, KU player hits a 10 mile high pop up. Decides he should talk **** to Ruffin on the way back to the dugout. Next player gets the high inside heater because his player talked ****. Again, etiquette. This time the ump tosses him, even though he was never issued a warning.
The argument wasn't "Why was he tossed?", the argument was "Why was he tossed with no warning?".
I talked to his dad right after it happened and he was smiling and said "I saw that coming." So I asked Bruce if Chance had a mean streak in him and he said yes, he was a lot meaner than Bruce was. That sewed it up for me. Chance could be the man. His delivery looks like Huston Street and it appears his demeanor is similar. We have needed someone with a killer instinct the last couple of years. I think Chance is going to be fun to watch.
Chance was close to being my new favorite player earlier this season but after that game he won my heart. I love watching him pitch with that intensity.
If true, that really stinks. He will learn from this but suspending him for four games, one of them a conference game, is way over the top in my opinion.
In response to the original question, I heard a part of the arguing had to do with how much time the new pitcher would get to warm up. We didn't have anybody ready and were basically throwing a cold pitcher out there.
I think the ejection of any player results in a four-game suspension per NCAA rules. This is a response to a bunch of fighting that went on a few years ago in college baseball. Don't know who the main culprits were, but it is a rule now.
the ruffin suspsenion came down from the big 12, not the ncaa. kyle russell didn't receive a suspension from the ncaa when he argued balls and strikes in the stanford series.
first i'm hearing of this, and i'm all for it. good on ya, buddy. on the other side, if my reading comprehension is up to par, he got a 4 game suspension for ALMOST hitting 2 batters?
Yes, he was suspended for ALMOST hitting players. The one time he hit the first guy, it was in the leg and it was because the guys stuck his leg out to get hit. It was so obvious that the ump called him back to the plate and no base was awarded.
