Rudy questions

Was on HDNET movies last night and I got to thinking

1) They make a big deal about the NCAA only allowing 60 players to dress, but they have 85 sholarships. Is that an old rule that was changed? I know we dress way more than 85 these days, and did in '89 when my then roommate was a walk-on. He didn't get to dress every game (he was a freshman), but did some. And, I believe the policy at the time was that upperclassmen walk-ons dressed for every home game. Road games were completely different, with the travel squad being much more limited.

2) Rudy's last practice/game. He had only been at ND for 2 years, so didn't he have 2 years of eligibility left? Also, he had to get into ND as a junior, b/c ND doesn't accept senior transfers (according to the movie), but couldn't he just switch majors an be a junior in something?

I know it's a movie, but I've been thinking about that.

BTW, I don't think the answer is "Because he was inverted"..

I don't know if it was a real rule or a movie rule. I was able to track down the scholarship limit changes (it was 100 in Rudy's time, having recently been reduced from no limits). It makes sense that they would have had a "dress limit" in the days of unlimited ships, and that likely continued when they first limited the ships. Someone with better Google skillz may turn up the actual rule.

i appreciate the legwork, but actually looking up the answers isn't really what these threads are about, is it?

I may have to look stuff up now as well. I wonder if Rudy really only dressed once or if that was all hollywood additions.

I know your question wasn't serious, but your thinking got me to thinking, so I wanted to know for myself. I was going to say "because he was inverted" but you cleverly ruled that out. I'm pretty sure that the answer is that Rudy's mind was a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives, but I could be wrong. If you go to the link, you can see the point during the play where rivulets begin forming. It's beautiful thing, really.

Ha, I caught myself watching that last night too. Did ND produce that movie? Man it's a friggin' recruiting video for players and students.

My favorite part is when "Rock" (the janitor) does the 2 really hard claps and then walks off.

I also like when "Rock" gives him that speech and says he's "5 foot nothin, a hundred and nothin'".

I actually watched that movie with my parents the summer after my freshman year in college? That is the last movie I have seen with my parents.

Oh yeah, when his brother died in the factory, my mom started balling. I mean really bad. I was balling when all the players started putting the jerseys on the coaches desk. :)
