Royal Carribean Cruises

My future wife and I are travelling on Adventure of the Seas for our honeymoon next month. Port stops in Antigua, Barbados, St. Maarten and one of the Virgin Islands. Leaves from Puerto Rico.

Anyone ever take this ship? Any general recommendations? This is my first cruise, seems like its going to be a good time.

have done one cruise and it was royal caribbean. out of miami. great time. gained 10 lbs. food was top notch.

You'll have a great time. Haven't been on AOS, but on other Royal Caribbean ships and enjoyed everyone. I also gained 10 pounds on my last cruise.. so watch out!

I go on 4 cruises a year for work and to play poker (tough, I know)... Royal Caribbean set the standard long ago for good quality (especially in the food department), and Carnival has caught up in recent years. Honestly now I couldn't tell you the difference between the two, and it's because both are good. You'll have a great time, make SURE you have at least a balcony room (or a suite if you can)--it really makes a difference. And try to smuggle on a little alcohol in your luggage, because otherwise you'll spend as much or more on just that than you did on booking your cruise in the first place!

you could tell the difference b/w carnival and RC, because the food on Carnival is ******* awful.

I'm hoping that RC is better. otherwise, I'm never going on another cruise. it was a chore to get through a meal. I like the idea of cruising, but seriously, Norwegian and Carnival left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended).

I've been on both RC and Carnival, and I could tell the difference between the two, not only in terms of food, but the "quality" of the people on board. RC is better.

I have been one one cruise Royal Carribean out of Miami. I would say if you do not have a bign group of people it is going to get pretty boring. The food on RC is pretty good, but I think for me the cruise thing just is not my deal. It was okay, but they nickel and dime oyu on everything. Their casino was an absolute waste of time. Good luck, but I think I would rather pick a destination and fly there. The cruise thing is for some, and not for others. I think I am in the not category.

I agree with Pepper that a cruise is fun with a group of people, but I just don't know how much fun I would have if I didn't know 20-100 other people on board. I still have to disagree with the comments on the Carnival food--because in the past 2 years Carnival has really stepped it up. Although if you're expecting 5-star food on Royal Caribbean (or any other cruise for that matter), you're going to be severely disappointed. The exception is the restaurant at the top of each ship where you pay +/- $30 per person to eat a 5-7 course meal. Great value for the money, and wouldn't be a bad idea for at least one night on your honeymoon.

IF you're going to be boarding in PR I think I might jsut stay in PR and then go to a few of the other islands as I saw fit. Again that is just me. I did have a good time on the cruise I took, but we had a group of about 20 of us. I would not go with just the wife, and we actually like each other ;-)

Hey thanks everyone for all of your responses.

The future wife loves cruises--I've never been on one. So we're going on one, dammit.

I've booked a balcony, and we're staying a night ahead and a night behind the cruise. I'm staying at the Intercontinental--any word on it:?

I'll report back to ya'll how it went. Thanks again for the comments!

I highly recommend the message boards on this site:
Cruise Critics . I took a cruise in April and it was a great way to find out about recommended excursions at our ports of call as well as hotel info at the port of embarkation.

I thought one of the biggest differences was the RC targeted older more mature cruisers while Carnival cruises were supposed to be geared toward the younger crowd, thus the "Fun Ships" motto that they had going on. Maybe I'm wrong

First, good job on the balcony. You'll be pleased (or your wife will, since she's probably been in an interior/oceanview room before).

Seceond, I won't argue what their marketing target is, but I can tell you the result is the same for both major cruise lines. Not a whole lot of single minglers on either RC or Carnival, and the age/socio-economic range is identical. If I didn't have to know what ship to board at the outset, I would have no idea what cruise line I was sailing on day 3 from the people onboard, nor from the quality of food or service. Cruise # 67 in 23 days...
