Roy Williams as a coach

After tonights game I got to thinking about Roy Williams and have come to the conclusion that he is the basketball equivalent of Bobby Bowden. Essentially, a slick talking, good ol' boy, super recruiter coach who basically just out-talents his competition. And when he faces a team that is equally athletic and deep as his own (like tonight) he doesn't seem to have an answer strategically. Seriously, when in his career has he ever shown that he can coach a bunch of scrubs and take down a giant, like the coaches at Davidson, Gonzaga, Valpo, George Mason and all those other successful mid-majors? Hell, even our own Rick Barnes showed he could do it at Providence before he moved on to Clemson and then here. Williams has always benefited in his career by coaching at powerhouses UNC (as an assistant), KU and UNC again. The guy has always had the most talented squads in the country almost every year and has one title to show for it.
So, am I totally off base here, or do I have a legitimate perception of Coach Roy?

Yeah, you are off base. Where do you get that UNC was more talented than KU? Not even close, this KU team has been building for three years.

Roy Williams is the Mack Brown of basketball - incredible recruiter, wonderful human being, runs a clean and successful program but not exactly the best when it comes to X's and O's.

Williams is no John Wooden or Dean Smith, but it does take some coaching talent, as well as recruiting skills, to virtually always be within shouting distance of the final four. I'm no Roy Williams fan because of some comments he made about Texas, but he does deserve some props.

What did he say about Texas?

I think he's an outstanding coach. I'm not going to hold a loss in the Final Four against him. Lots of terrific coaches have lost in the Final Four. It's true that he usually has the benefit of great talent, but so do most teams in the Final Four.

I think a lot of people vastly underrate exactly how hard it is to win it all.

Even Dean Smith only won 2 national championships, & those took Michael Jordan & Chris Webber to win.

Roy Williams has been to what, 6 Final Fours? How many active coaches have been to more?

The fact that KU has at least 3 potential NBA picks (Chalmers, Rush, Jackson) has got to help them immensely. At UT these guys would have opted for the NBA after their sophomore years. But here they are, all together. Just like the guys who came back for their senior year at Florida and got #2 for them.

NC has Hansbrough. He was NOT overly impressive yesterday. He doesn't play real defense (trying to draw the charge and doing your best imitation of a shot duck does not constitute defense) and when double-teamed can get flustered.

I think you mean Arthur, not Jackson. Arthur is a sophmore. Rush didn't stay in the draft because he tore up his knee. Chalmers probably wasn't a lottery level pick last year, so he returned.

I don't think any of those guys stayed an extra year because they were in Lawrence and not Austin.

Roy Williams is good for college basketball. I was disappointed when he left the Big 12. It made the conference poorer because of his decision, at least for the short term.

He's not my favorite coach, from an on court and an off court perspective. I, too, liken him to Mack Brown, and think it would be entirely appropriate if the two of them were coaching at the same school. Still, his accomplishments are extremely impressive, IMO.
