Roy Miller short yardage FB

Cody Johnson may be a better runner, but I doubt he would strike fear into the heart of a would-be tackler as much as Roy barreling toward him.

How effective was that play last year when it was just a running play? I would imagine they would throw it very very seldom to Miller in comparison.

Cody at 260 is plenty enough for a fear factor. There's no need for this, just another example of our coaches (GD especially) thinking they're cute and smart. Use your damn fullback, he's a tank, jeez.

this pleases me.

Hook'em!!!

i disagree. throw a huge DT in the backfield, and the opponent is going to not only notice, but make damn sure they account for him (see what the hell he's doing, where he's going).

use your already established and fully powered fullback to get the job done, or decoy, or misdirect if you want to, pull a TE back there. there are still a ton of things you can do on the goal line without getting cute like this.

Is it possible that we see Roy Miller in our backfield before we see John Chiles there? Really?

This is a gimmick. Sometimes (last year) gimmicks are effective. If we're gonna be gimmicky, I hope all of the guys we use are as effective at it as Lokey was.

On another note, if Roy Miller is a better back than Cody Johnson in a goalline situation, I would really raise an eyebrow. It might make me start to think that we should just stop recruiting big backs altogether when we can just throw this years' senior DT in at that position.

And what happens when our best DT goes down playing offense? We have plenty of guys that can handle that role without risk.

Sounds rather stupid to me. Why risk additional exposure to your best DT when there is already a lack of depth at the position. On bad hit to his knee and its over. Imagine Tom Landry using Bob Lilly in the same way. Stupid, simple stupid.

uhhh guys, Roy Miller is the second strongest guy on the team...regardless of position. I like the move. not only that, but I trust that the coaches have seen a LOT more of our personel...more than any media outlet, fan, etc.

Put the best players on the field, period. Injuries are a part of football. If they happen, they happen but they DO happen a heckuva lot more when you take the field playing tentative.

hmmm... since Lamarr Houston moved there, I wouldn't think Roy was the best running back out of the defensive tackles...

Roy is not playing running back, he's playing fullback. He is not necessarily supplanting Cody Johnson (probably a short-yardage RB) either, since he's playing FB.

Correct me if im wrong but aren't players still aloud to jump over the line ala Priest Homes against North Carolina in the Sun Bowl, or did they outlaw that?

I don't see the problem with this at all. The reason we used Lokey as a goaline FB last year was because of our struggles in short yardage situations in 06. It seemed to work out pretty well. The injury concerns are silly. He's no more likely to get hurt on the 3 or 4 plays a game he'll get at FB than at DT. Football players are supposed to go play. We could protect all our best players by keeping them on the bench, but we probably wouldn't be too successful that way.

He's not in there to carry the ball, or to supplant Cody Johnson, but simply to move the pile. You guys act like Lokey carried the ball a lot last year or something. He never had a single rush. The only time he touched the football was that TD catch in the Holiday Bowl.

Now, as to Slugga's point about passing closer to the goaline, I absolutely agree we need to see more of it.. We seem hellbent on pounding it in. But, if we're going to stick to that, this is probably the best way to do it. I wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson as the ballcarrier behind Miller in these situations, in fact.

If a bad-*** DT is a better blocker than a backup, highly recruited OG, then McWhorter is likely a failure. I don't believe that.

DT's don't play defense because they can't block. They play there because they are better athletes than the guards.

Look at it from a practical perspective. How many times have you seen a backup guard in one of those jumbo sets? Have you seen it at all? I can tell you several occasions at various levels where a DT was used in that same role, and that includes the NFL.
