Rounders question

It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but IIRC it had something to do with his Oreos. I think if he was bluffing, he didn't eat the oreos. Or maybe it's the other way around.

BA,

No way in hell KGB had AA that last hand. If i remember the cards as they came out correctly, AA on the river would have been 2nd nuts, behind the only straight on the board

If Teddy seriously put Mike on a draw (as he kept saying aloud), AND if he hit his set of aces on the river (that ace could not have helped you), he sure as hell would not have bet it all after Mike checked. If KGB really had Mike on a draw, moving all in eliminates Mike's ability to call if he had something like 3rd pair and an inside straight draw

In that position KGB would have made a smallish bet- looking like he was weak, hoping Mike would have come over the top with an "I missed my draw but I am going to bluff anyway" move. That way he gets more out of Mike.

I think KGB was the one actually on the draw...

KGB often picked up an oreo and pulled it open while pondering a decision. If he didn't have a made hand, he would put the oreo back together and not eat it. If he did eat it, it meant he had a made hand.

I think KGB had AA on the last hand, and he bet it all on the river because he had just made a set and he knew Mike McD had already committed almost his entire stack. Of course, that begs the question of why KGB didn't get a little suspicious when Mike called his pot sized bet on the turn.

I guess he could have had AT, but AA makes more sense, especially since that's what he had when he busted Mike at the beginning of the movie.

You don't know that he really thought he was on a draw. A draw probably wouldn't have called the previous bet. Just like when Matt Damon said "I don't think you've got the spades" at the beginning, he was possibly inviting a call of his all-in. It's the famous "beware the speech" adage in poker. If someone goes out of their way to say something like that before they shove all in, it typically means a VERY strong hand. He had the near nuts, and figured Matt Damon was strong too to call his previous bet. He probably put him on a lower set or 2 pair. Also, that is really boring if that's what the hand was. Doesn't take much skill to cooler a guy. Just like Matt Damon's had at the beginning was a cooler. The money was almost certainly going in the middle anyway. Nuts vs 2nd nuts in a heads-up match, there's not a lot of ways it can play out. I would have been more impressed with a sick river call with pocket deuces up against king high for the win.

More confusing to me was when the dude he owed the money to got angry at the end. Do people frequently get angry when they are getting paid the money they are owed? Would he rather have beaten him up at that point? If so, why? Matt Damon didn't seem like nearly the dick Ed Norton was.

Also, from a money standpoint, why offer to play him heads up with that last bit of money he had? Why not just say "give me the money now, and I'll let you live another week"? If Teddy KGB refused to play him, Matt Damon still has to pay them the money. Zero risk for them that way.

True. But if Damon loses, KGB gets the money. If he wins, Mother gets paid.

And he already said it was all the money or get a beating.

Was he going to kill Matt Damon or just beat the **** out of him and keep the juice going on the money to keep Damon in debt for a long time?

The other problem with Rounders was the amount Mike won from Teddy, he borrowed 10 grand from the judge and beat Teddy the first time to make $20,000, they played again and Mike should have come out with $40,000 yet he pays off Granma and the judge and still has 30 grand left.

I consider myself a great poker player. You can ask txsooner to confirm. I put him on q/8- q/10, something like that.

As far as the money he won from the mad Russian, I beleive Damon says reload at any time. So that makes me believe that KGB reloaded a few times.

Can't help but watch that movie when it is on.

KGB's tell already answered.

Total money won by Mike assumes KGB reloaded (took out more money) a few times, which the movie showed.

It is just a movie of course so some exceptions must be made, but if we are talking reality the final hand was stupid. Mike still had a rather large stack BEFORE the final bet. If he was on a draw and missed, he would have just folded and still had over 20K or so to gamble with. You recall he pushes in a huge stack at the end. Still a cool movie though.
