Rosie's Tamale House

Went on sunday. Has this place changed management? Because they've gone downhill. I haven't been in probably 12 years.

When I was in grade school my dad and I made quite a few trips out there because it was pretty good food and it actually felt like a roadtrip since the burbs hadn't even come close to reaching 71 and 620. Actually, I don't think they'd even made it to 360 yet.

Anyway, the food was horrible. The queso was melted velveeta. Unacceptable. I can make my own cheese-flavored water, thank you.

Then I tried to order fajitas but they're only available on Wednesday and saturday. wtf? It's not like fajitas are difficult to cook.

So I ordered a chimichanga. Horrible. It tasted like a microwave burrito, which would be fine if I had paid $1.99 for it.

What happened? I used to love that place.

grew up 5m down hwy 71..

went for the first time in a few years last summer. it still was the best Mexican food the world has come to know. and they still had the same management when i was there. i recognized her son.

first place i ever met dkr. had lunch with willie nelson there too. i got the willie plate for that special occasion.

Management hasn't changed.

I live in the area and have for quite a long time now, quality has always been great. You must have caught them on a bad night.

The fajita days are still a mystery. That along with all the other little things that make Rosie's unique (no credit cards, bring your own beer, etc).

I eat there several times a month and have since 1972, ordering various items from plastic covered menus that have scarcely changed.

I haven't noticed any difference at all at Rosie's, not in the food, the service, their policies, the decor or the family management, except that, due to the passage of time, the son is in charge now.

I vaguely remember that the dining room was enlarged sometime ago.

A few busboys have become waiters and some waiters have become supervisors and managers.

I've never seen the cooks but I'll bet there's some longevity back there in the kitchen too.

Along with the Furr's Cafeteria on South Lamar and Sandy's on Barton Springs Road, it's the oldest place I've continuously eaten at in Austin.

Add Matt's El Rancho to those two, although I haven't eaten there nearly as much.

El Matt's used to be on the northern edge of downtown by the freeway, for I don't know how many years, before it moved to South Lamar.

I remember another Rosie's location, perhaps the original, on the northeast corner of South Congress and Oltorf which closed and then became the first, I think, Pancho's "raise the flag for more" restaurant in Austin.

And, I believe, there once was a North Austin Rosie's location, which I never visited, also.

If my memory has failed about any of this, please feel free to correct me.

there was a Rosie's in a strip mall near Highland Mall a while back.

I love Rosie's.

'Twas a Rosies on Lake Creek Pkwy near 183/620 way back when, if I recall correctly. That was when Lake Creek was about 5 stop lights down Research from the true edge of Austin. Now the edge of Austin is basically Lampasas.

Guess I went on a bad night then.

But seriously, melted velveeta? Did the cook get lazy or is that normal?

i don't remember their queso being anything special in the 18 years i've been going there. it's normally melted velveeta type product with a few chopped pieces of pepper/onion/tomato.

the son is a total and complete ***. I waited on him about 15 years ago at a restaurant and he was a complete and total POS, threatened my life to a manager for helping a family with kids before helping him.
