Rose Bowl Travel

Cabo Cantina on Sunset is a cool place, reminds me of Hula Hut in Austin....best happy hour in town, 2 for 1 drinks: The food is good, the waitstaff is beautiful and friendly, plenty of TVs for games and this is the only place in town where you can get 2 red bull and vodkas(my drink of choice!) for $6 at happy hour. There's always a full house at Cabo.

Broadway Bar on Broadway in downtown is pretty popular. Don't recall names, they may be mentioned but a block or two east of Broadway, Spring and Main I think, have some small cool dive bars and restaurants popping up with the arrival of the young crowd that moved into the downtown lofts. Some really cool places. If I can get some names, I'll reply.

Also J Lounge a little south of there is ok, lots of Asian chix if you're into that pretty much Thur-Sat. Have to dress nice thou, no shorts or hats or tennis shoes, etc.

If you're downtown I would hit up the Staples area as it's not too far down and has a lot of new bars/restaurants, bowling and what not. But watch out for parking. Most places around there are $20-$25 to park unless you want to walk a little ways.

Also Little Tokyo is not too far cab wise to the northeast and there are some cool bars there and great sushi at Zencu.

Chinatown is just north if you need a chinese food fix and are up late, some places are open till 4 on certain nights. I love Hop Luie(sp?) Also a great dim sum place called CBS or somethig like that and it goes on practically all day.

There are plenty of dive bars and hipster hangouts throughout, but I've never been, just seen.

As far as bar-b-q DO NOT FUCKIN GO TO "Barn Burners" in Pasadena. OVERPRICED, crappy food for what you pay and you get ****** portions.

Also the Sunset and Vine area has really grown, more shops and restaurants and the Cinermadome if you're staying down that way.

Catholic, Bigwill is right, Rosemead is right on the edge of sketch. But just to the west, alhambra, etc is a lot of great little Asian food joints. Alhambra does have a decent little downtown area with restaurants and bars, and may make more sesne for you than coming all the way in if you have to cab it. I would highly advise the Chinese foot massage places though. 1 hour/$15 and they do a great job. No, not a happy ending place but damn good cheap massage. Just about any place is good enough, and I usually tip em about $5.

Thanks to all the area residents for the info...any feel for drive time from Burbank airport into downtown LA at about 6PM or so on an average weekday (not gameday)?

Catholic, is that the Holiday Inn around 10th and Fig? IF so, you're right in that Figueroa corridor that is nice and is where most of the remodeling down in downtown is. You're not too far from the Staples activity district I mentioned earlier.

Ignatius, it's gonna suck. You may make it to the 2 Freeway in decent time, but from there in to downtown on the 5 Freeway to the 110 Freeway is teh suck. I know shortcuts that I'd take, and if you want I can tell ya what I'd do, but otherwise you'll just have to sit in traffic if you don't want to worry about getting lost. Figure at least an hour to hour and a half. It may be worth just hanging in Burbank and go eat, plenty of restaurants a short drive south on the 5 from the airport.

Big Will (and others), we have reservations at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City. Is this reasonably close to the Rose Bowl and restaurants, etc.? Thanks for your help.

Horn N LA - yep, I am on Fig (as you locals obviously say) and 10th.
I'm a stones-throw away from Staples. We plan on walking to the Lakers game the night before the game.

It seems like everything will be easy to get to from Fig. My daughter also wants to see the Coliseum and drive by USC campus. She likes stuff like that. Both are on Fig St, right?

Catholic, yep USC and the Coliseum are right down Fig. I actually work on the corner of Fig and 32nd at a satellite of the USC film school. I don't think you can go south from Fig that far north, as it turns into 1-way just north of Staples complex, but, once you're on it, head south, you'll pass Adams, Jefferson and then should hit Exposition where the Coliseum area is. You might be able to drive around campus that week, since classes haven't started yet. Should be an entrance on Fig, but better to take Jefferson to McClintock and turn in there. DO NOT go down to the Coliseum at night, or at least get out of your car. Not as bad as it used to be, but still way too sketch.

Hudson, maybe Will might be more familiar, but it's part of the "valley" and aside from regular neighborhood shops and restaurants, not all that much is there. Universal City is not too far though, and that has a whole bunch of stuff. Some studios also there, that might have tours or tapings to go check out. Not all that close to the Rose Bowl either, but make sure when you take the 101 Freeway in, to merge on to the 134 Freeway, that'll take ya right near it.

Anyone take the Gold Line back into LA from Pasadena after the game in '06? We took it out there against Michigan but rode back with friends afterward, and had a car against USC. Thinking about taking it out there and back this year, but wondering how freakin' packed the line is to get on it after the game. From the Metro schedule it looks like there are 6 runs between 10PM and the last one at 11:47PM, I sure as hell don't want to be looking for a cab in dead-*** Pasadena after midnight...

agree with horn in LA on sportsmans lodge

Catholic: Lots of museums right next to USC, including La Brea Tar Pits, if your daughter is interested. Also the Getty is out on the 405, near UCLA.

Will, I don't think we're talking about the same USC.

USC ain't no where near the tar pits. But yes there are a few museums over by the tar pits including LACMA which is a HUGE complex. Getty is further west going toward UCLA.

my bad. The California Science Center aka Museum of Science and Industry is located in Exposition park, adjacent to USC.

Thanks fellas. Your tips are gonna make this trip much more pleasant. One more question (until my next one) - Parking.

First let me say that we are driving out to Cali from Texas.
I was planning on leaving to the Rose Bowl from the motel on game day at around 8 am. Is this a good idea? Too early - too late?
I really don't want to be there real early, but if it means avoiding traffic headaches - I'll be there at 6 am.
Or do ya'll recommend taking a bus, train, etc? Remember, I'm on Fig and 10th by Staples. Thanks.

Rose Bowl parking site

In '06 we didn't get out there super early....maybe around noonish if memory serves and were still able to park on the golf course. I plan on getting out there earlier this time....not because I fear for parking availability or to beat the traffic but because there just may be no better tailgate environment than the Rose Bowl. I wasn't aware of that last time.

If you BYOB I'm sure you can saddle up with just about any tailgate out there. That's our plan anyway. My suggestion is to get out there as early as you can to soak it all in....parking opens at 8am.

Now if the weather isn't that great, that may be a different story but it was GLORIOUS in '06!

Ignatius - I took the train back after the game in '06. We stayed for quite a while after the big win tailgating/celebrating, so it was probably close to the last departure, if not the last. It wasn't too crowded at that hour. My mistake was not researching the schedule more carefully. We needed to transfer at the downtown station and take the blue line down to Long Beach, but discovered that we had missed the last blue line departure of the evening. I was cursing myself $70 later, as a cab dropped us off at our Sunset Beach rental. I quickly got over it, however, as I reminded myself that the Horns just won the NC.

LC: get out early and get your *** to the hornfans tailgate. We ALWAYS have a great time. Say hello when you get there...I'll be wearing a burnt orange shirt.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Does anyone have suggestions on good Hollywood restaurants and clubs? We'll be staying in that area. (my apologies if I missed any on this thread).

If anyone is into Korean BBQ, Koretown is just west of the Staples Center...

If you like All-U-can-Eat Korean BBQ, then go to Manna BBQ. $16.95 for all you can eat... and you go for someone's birthday, there is a special treat...

If you like Taiwanese dumplings, then Din Tai Fung in Arcadia about 10 minutes east of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl is the bomb!!! authentic dumplings from the same restaurant that is famous in Taiwan...

If any of you are into Ramen noodles (not the Maruchan cheap stuff you can get at HEB), then there are a ton of those in West Los Angeles, Torrance, and Redondo Beach... one of the Kings of Ramen from Japan (yes he is one of the 5 kings and his name is Nakamura) has a place called California Ramen that servers a unique style of Ramen... Santouka in some of the Marukai Japanese markets also serves some awesome Ramen... Hakata Shinsengumi has the best pork broth and traditional ramen... check this website out if you want to know about ramen -->The Link

There is a BBQ joint called Baby Blues BBQ in Venice and West Hollywood that has some awesome ribs and a XXX spicy sauce that is really good... Definitely stay away from the Beef Brisket, however... not even close to any of the joints in Austin or Lockhart!!!

If you like an institution
I've got more to post about places to eat...

Yeah...great asian in LA. Great jewish deli (Langers, Brents, etc) great greek (Papadakis) and great mexican (El Coyote and a bizallion others).

If Robert will allow me, I intend to man the grill this year as well. We are currently 2-0 in Pasadena when I prepare the links. We simply cannot risk the lack of focusness with someone else doing it.

Please come say hello again. And grab me a beer on your way over, please. It gets hot when cooking those things. IIRC, we did 1500 links last time, along with 30 "30 Packs" of suds. The horse trailer was pretty full after the Costco run, and pretty empty on the way home from the game.

staying at westin pasadena. good, bad, ugly? wanted game day to be easy, and heard there might be a decent bar or two in pasadena area so pulled the trigger. figure we will be going west a lot, better to take a cab or car service to hollywood area? what should i expect to pay?

What can I expect traffic wise from Universal City to Santa Ana thursday morning? I know traffic will be horrific, so you can save that part. It says its 48 miles and about an hour, but how long can I really expect with work rush hour if I need to be at SNA at 9am? Thanks.

Styaing at Holiday Inn Express in Century City. Any need to be concerned about that part of town at night? Also, I hear that the MTA (train) goes just a couple blocks near the stadium. Is that a safe way to travel back that night after the game?
