Rose Bowl tailgating restrictions

The booklet that accompanied my BCSCG tix mentioned that no "tents" are allowed on the stadium grounds (i.e., in the parking areas on the golf course), nor are "open flames" permitted. I seem to recall a lot of tailgating canopies (not exactly tents, I guess) and barbeques at both the 2005 & 2006 Rose Bowls. Is this just lip service to rules that are never enforced, or something new? Would a propane grill be considered an "open flame"? We've always barbequed at the Rose using a little Hibachi grill (I live out here in SoCal and also went to see the Horns play UCLA in '98, and I've gone to a couple of non-Horn Rose Bowls as well) and no one gave us a second look.

Doc, we used my gas grill at both Rose Bowls hornfans tailgates (Mich and USC). We did the charcoal pit thingy at the Holiday Bowls. I'm glad to have the info, as I was looking around for a large grill to rent/buy. Gas it is.

We also had multiple "easy up" style awnings. Nobody gave us any trouble.

Here's how I would interpret the rules until someone on site told me differently:

1. A tent is a tent. It's what you sleep in when camping.
2. A canopy is not a tent.
3. An open fire is an open fire. It's what you build when camping.
4. A BBQ grill (gas or charcoal) is not an open fire.

I agree. But if they dropped the hammer and we ended up with 1500 cold sausages, tailgaters wouldn't be pleased.
