Ropa Vieja

I had a ropa vieja sandwich at a Cuban restaurant in Dallas and really want to try to make it myself. Does anyone have a good recipe?

I'll ask my wife. Or my mother in law. Or the nanny. The three of them are what I call "the Island People" since they represent Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

Since this translates as an "old clothes" sandwich, I'm left wondering...

What is in a "ropa vieja" sandwich?

Well, since no one bothered to answer my question, I used this "search engine" called "Google" (YES, that's really it's name) and I found this explanation of various CUBAN dishes. In reply to:

Thanks Napolean. I did google it and found a recipe or two, I just wondered if anyone here had a tried and true family recipe or something. I'll try this one and report back.

Sorry 'bout that. Getting a reliable recipe from the Island People wasn't as easy as I thought. Seems they do all from memory.

El Rey here in Houston has good ropa vieja tacos, so I thought I'd try the recipe. It was good. I added some bay leaves, upped the garlic, and garnished with cilantro and chopped fresh onions.

Next time I'll probably cut the tomato sauce amt in half. Or just go with the paste. And maybe add a diced jalapeno.
