I really really liked Ron Stone. And he really seemed to like Texas. I remember him signing a book he wrote about the "Texas City Disaster," for my parents....
Grew up with him - always seemed to be on in the background. I haven't lived in Houston for 16 years, and have lived in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio since - I can genuinely say that Houston, and especially Ron Stone, delivered the news better than anyone. I feel like a part of my childhood just died. I am sad.
wow, I remember him from the 80s when he was the anchor at KPRC and Ron Franklin was the sports lead. Ron Stone went to the same high school as Peter Gardere.
I wish I could get all those old Eyes of Texas episodes on DVD. Does anyone know who sang the intro song to that show? My favorite news anchor of all time.
I live just down the street from his family and I would see him out all the time walking the neighborhood. He would always have a big hello for you like you were his best friend. He was so proud of his grandchildren, and I know they will miss him most of all.
I moved to Houston in 82 and remember always trying to turn on the news at 5:00 p.m. just to see what he and Doug Johnson would get into. When Ron delivered the news, you felt like it was from a guy you could trust, not some over the top pretty boy trying to sell you the days blood and guts features. I'm sure gonna miss him.
More than anyone else I can think of, Ron Stone is the face, and voice, of Houston. By acclamation, he was a superb newscaster, and by all accounts I've heard, he was a fine man too.
