Romney Tax Plan: Get the Details

I think the details are irrelevant at this point. The best answer that I heard on this point was from the VP debate when Ryan said the details will be worked out between the two parties. The framework is where the talks about the details will stem from; the idea is to start with what Romney/Ryan would like to happen (framework). This shows that they are willing to listen to other ideas, whether or not they do is yet to be seen (if elected).

Personally, why wait? If Ryan is willing to start with their premise if elected, why not introduce it now to the House Dems/Repubs and work it out for a vote?

The details haven't been provided yet. The plan is to lower rates which will lower revenues. But then to make that back up by simplying the tax code and removing or changing many deductions and loopholes. The problem is that they don't haven't said what those will be. They actually have said they will wait until they are office and then work on a bipartisan effort to nail down those details. So no plan. And then economists have pointed out that there aren't enough deductions/loopholes which can be removed for the top tax payers to make up the difference. So either we are going to be running larger deficits, ala the Bush tax cuts which increased deficits, or these deductions/loopholes are also going to target the middle class who will then see a tax hike.

Not to pick on Romney either. The Obama plan doesn't add up either and requires we get sustained 5% GDP growth which just isn't going to happen. Middle class get ready, under either of these guys we are going to see tax hikes over the next 10 years. I am guessing around a 30% tax increase. Say you are making 100k and paying 20% effective tax rate. In 10 years that will be paying another 6k or 26k in taxes. It is just simple math.

In a way Romney and Ryan are doing the right thing by saying they're going to work out the details on Capitol Hill, while only setting forth a broad framework during the campaign. They're also being honest. Congress works out the details on all legislative initiatives. That's why Obama gave only a broad framework of the Affordable Care Act (and said virtually nothing about where the money would come from to pay for it) and let Congress do the rest. And of course, the actual bill that became law is extremely different on both broad and specific levels from what Obama discussed back in 2008.

Of course, because they were in the tank for Obama in 2008 (less so this time), the media did very little crowing about details for the ACA.

Doesn't Romney say that alot of the shortfall will be made up by increased revenue with more people working and paying taxes to the federal government?

I think the details are irrelevant at this point.

Sorry, but that's the typical symptom of the nutless and gutless partisan: details don't matter, what does matter is that it's my guy.

Until we, the electorate, wake up and demand more details, more accountability from our politicians, things aren't going to improve.

That the majority (or even vast majority) of the public won't take the time and effort to study the details in no way excuses the lack of details.

I'm frankly sick of the partisan stench of internet politics. Anybody who says that the "details don't matter" is a crappy American, imo. They are lazy and don't want to be bothered with the messy details. That goes for both sides.

Knowing the conceptual framework of the plan, it can in theory be revenue neutral. People's effective tax rates are usually a lot lower than the headline rates so we should be indifferent in achieving the same rate via a low fixed rate with no exceptions or a higher fixed rate than can be watered down via exemptions.

All of this posturing about details is a bit silly however as the larger issue is that our government has promised entitlements checks that it can't cash.

We've seen how well the Obama deficit reduction plan has worked.

I'm more hopeful about the Romney economic Plan. I'm sure all it's goals could be met in the right time and circumstance. In fact, I've looked at the math and think it could all be settled in a single one-hour episode that begins wth Tattoo pointing towards the sky and exclaiming "De Plane, De Plane!"

Was this directed to me?

If the shoe fits, wear it. I don't care.

I'm sick of morons on both sides who don't demand accountability from their leaders.

but no candidate has ever given you details.

I don't have data to say that's not true, but my guess is that most statements like yours "nothing has ever/ or never" are not true. I'm sure we can look in the past and find candidates who have given details.

And where did I suggest that he's given an "unusually small amount of details?"

Too many people let too many politicians slide. And it's great if you've "served your country" and all, but that has jack squat to do with this topic. Stop using that as a shield to hide behind or to support your bad opinions.

Until the voting public demands more we're going to continue to get lousy politicians.

The details are irrelevant. ********.

Maybe I should clarify my irrelevant part. It is irrelevant because nobody is going to make up their mind based on some small or specific detail, I am generalizing of course, but the over point is most minds are made up. The few that are undecided may want more specific details but is that going to win them over?

What more do you want to know? What would make you vote for or against if you knew the specifics?

I wasn't trying to hide behind the "severed my country", by the way I am still serving, but I take offense to the notion that I am lazy American who doesn't do detail research. In the case of taxes, I have done plenty of research and posted a thread on this board showing how lowering taxes and getting rid of loopholes, credits and deductions will actually increase revenue. I didn't do a lot of details on my idea, just a framework and a few simple rules.

The Linky

This plan that I proposed would give credence to what Romney wants to do. Not saying that he will do it or do it the way I proposed but it shows that it could mathematically work. Also, it was just a framework and if you read the posts it has to be tweeked because I was only looking at it from my viewpoint. That is the premise on what Romney is trying to do. Again, the details are irrelevant at this point, give me a good idea to work with and the small things can be worked out amongst the parties in Congress.
