Rolling the Dice

Either the respondents didn't read the article or have chosen to tailor responses to just one question: How much radiation can be harmful? There are many other things brought out in the article and its links to various studies and articles.

1) The "potential" disaster lies with the fuel rods precariously stored in a compromised pool that would easily be destroyed in the event another earthquake occurs.

2) All kinds of regulations and safeguards have been violated by the energy company (TEPCO) in order to save costs.

3) Regulatory capture - the pedaling of influence - has resulted in lax enforcement and punishment.

4) Media coverage has been controlled to a great extent by government. This is true especially in Japan, but also the US.

5) Many nuclear plants have surpassed or will soon be approaching the date in which they are scheduled to be decommissioned. The back end costs are extremely high and as of yet, there isn't a good way to dispose of the spent fuel rods. The amount of spent fuel at some of these facilities has the potential to emit more radiation that several bombs.

6) Just as with any industry, profit has to be balanced with the public good. When an industry, no matter what it is, has too much political power, the public good can be compromised via corruption. With nuclear energy, we cannot afford to let that happen.
