I'm pretty sure I've come across his name a time or two on this board. Can't remember if it was negative or positive. Anyway, he's playing a live outdoor concert tonite here in Knoxville.

Worth going?

One word: Abso-freaking-lutely

Granted, it's not as much fun if you're not familiar with some of his stuff before you go. It's not like he just puts on an amazing show, but it's a good time when you can sing along a little bit.

Try downloading "The Road Goes on Forever" and "Merry Christmas From the Family" for a taste of his most popular work.

I used to like his music back when I was in high school, but just got tired of the whole Texas country music scene after a year or two in college. Probably after hearing all of the same songs over and over.

That's the thing. I never got into the whole Texas music scene when I was in Austin for college.
Only after moving up here and learning to appreciate this type of music have I become interested. Just recently got into Van Zandt and am waiting on his documentary to get here from Blockbuster.
The only Texas country music I heard growing up was when I was really young and my grandfather - who was about as "Cowboy" as there is - listened to it.
I guess part of my recent obsession is due to missing him.

His music really brings back some great high school memories. He puts on a good show, definitely go see him.

REK transcends the fleeting popularity of the Texas Country scene that rapidly emerged and flamed out a few years back. He's been making good music since the 1980s.

That being said, I am not a huge fan of a couple of his recent albums.

I don't equate REK to the newer version of Texas Country at all. His songs actually tell good stories with good music. I also don't really like much of his new stuff. And to the original poster, I would definitely be at that show tonight.

I like him. He really reminds me of freshman year at UT. For aggy, he's pretty cool.

If you've never seen him, go. If you've seen him once, they're usually all the same.

I wouldn't lump him in with "Texas Country."

If anything he's a folk singer. Plus he and Lyle Lovett have been writing these songs since before Pat Green and the other flavors of the week were in diapers.

If you are a fan of strong musicianship, I would highly recommend his performance. IMO, Rich Brotherton is one of the finest lead guitarist I've ever seen. If it's a GA show, sit close enough to check out Rich, Bill Whitbeck, and Marty Muse play.

Here's an analogy for you...

REK is to Pat Green as The Beatles are to The Monkees.

He's a damn fine songwriter and performer, and should never be bottled up in the "Texas Country Music" category. He's so much more than that.

Go see him.

i saw him open for DMB last summer.

hadn't heard a lick of his music before then...

now i am a HUGE fan. definitely go.

"REK gave birth to Cory Morrow and Pat Green and the rise and popular Texas Country a few years back. REK *is* Frat/Pop Texas Country music."

-- And Steve Fromholz gave birth to REK
