So the wife and kids want to go on a road trip so we are heading out 8/10 to L.A. via I-10 any places along the way that are a must to eat or any places in L.A. to try besides the obvious: In N Out, Roscoes, Phillipes. We will be in L.A. for a week planning on doing Disney for a couple of days.

You must stop in Van Horn and have a meal at Papa Chuy's. It's famous for being named to John Madden's Top 10 "Haul" of Fame restaurants. Honestly, I don't remember the food being spectacular, but the the joint is practically a shrine to John Madden. It was a popular topic on conversation among Horn Fans who made the roadie to the Fiesta Bowl in 1996.

I did a drive from San Diego to Houston last May. After a really wet Spring, west Texas was looking incredibly green and lush. That might not be the case this year.

Best place to eat between San Antonio and LA is The Cafe Next Door in Ozona. Home cooking, great food. On West bound exit next door to the Chevron station (thus the name). I used to go to El Paso every month - still looking for a really good meal other than Roscoe's hamburgers.

If you are staying in Orange County, The Arches in Newport Beach is very nostalgic. Call to make sure it is still open because he lost his lease and was trying to renew. It was Humphrey Bogart's favorite restaurant and supposedly had his own spot at the bar. John Wayne and his wife went there every Thursday night for steak (their house is a few blocks away). Most waiters have been there over 20 years. Pricey.

There are a few places on Balboa Island (end of 55 frwy across PCH). Avoid Denis Rodman's place, but several burger and beer places.

Let the wife go to South Coast Plaza and you take the kids into Ruby's in the garage (NOT RUBY TUESDAYS). It's a much better version of Johnny Rockets with a bigger menu, better food and service, but same malt shop theme.

Should you get up to the people's republic of Santa Monica, Ocean Ave Cafe is really good. There is a Mexican food restaurant on Wilshire at about 9th or 11th (northwest corner) that has about the best Mexican food I've eaten outside Texas. A really good hamburger place in the 2600 block of Wilshire. (Get near the window because a number of actresses go to the Starbucks on the corner of 26th & Wilshire).

If you can avoid Facist Square, do so. Still trying to figure out which Aggie designed an "oval Galleria" and names it "Fashion Square". Good idea to send wife there and take kids to the beach.

If you go to the Hollywood area, which you should if you've never seen it, then you should also go to the Farmer's market which is a 10-15min drive from the hollywood/highland touristy area.

Don't get the gumbo at the gumbo pot. I was disappointed. Farmer's market has every type of food you can think of, so it's a fun place to go for lunch.

rent a duffy boat and cruise newport harbor. that's wayy cool.

Also, too bad you're coming so late. Blue whales have been hanging around the newport coast. Big mofos.
