I am getting roadrunner installed this weekend and need to know what it buy. I plan on running the cable modem into a router(what router?) and then into my playstation....I have a wireless card for my laptop that I was using to tap into my neighborsroadrunner (D LINK I think)...my desktop doesnt have anything, is there something I can buy that would make it pick up the wireless connection via USB port? Naturally my PS2 and computers are all in different rooms....so will this work?

Thanks for the link...that helps soom but not completely...what about a usb connection for making my desktop wireless?

Beer, here are the basics.

You have a wireless card on your laptop, so start with that.

Buy a wirless router that supports your existing card's standard (you may want to take the card with you to the store and let them choose). I would try to stick to the same brand if possible.

To connect your PC, you have several options. 1) If it has an ethernet port and is in a good location, you can plug it in directly to the router with an ethernet cable. 2) If it has an ethernet port but is not in a good place for a phisical connection, you can buy an ethernet to wireless bridge. This is merely a wireless receiver that plugs into your ethernet port. 3) Buy a USB wireless receiver. 4) Buy a PCI wireless card and install it. As always, if you can stick with the same brand as your router, do so.

Your gaming console should have an ethernet port. To connect it to the router, use option 1 or 2 from above.

I have not found that any one brand is better than another, Though others have had issues with one brand or another. I do think it is important to try to stick with one brand if it is possible to do so.

Regarding the wireless standards, there is no need to pay more for higher bandwidth unless you will be doing a lot of networking between your laptop and PC. The slowest wireless connection that is currently available will be faster than your Road Runner connection. Thus, any wireless standard should be adequate for surfing.

thanks for the info...I will get the Dlink wirless router and the d link usb hookup....this bridge thing I have never heard of, how much does that run? Can I bridge my PS2?

Also TimeWarner left me TWO cable modems by accident..the one they installed an another one that he got hit but switched out for some reason....Is it possible to have both of these hooked up? I guess all I would need is apower source since he only left one of those for a toshiba cable modem... He also seemed to indicate that on the outside of my house that the one hooked up to roadrunner needed to be screwed into the splittler marked 3.75? Is that true?

Not trying to be an ***, but I already answered your first question in the post above, and I even provided a link to a D-Link wireless to ethernet bridge in one of the other threads that I linked in my first response. You did read all three of those threads completely, right? I didn't link them to be a smartass. They all had useful information regarding your problem.

Obviously I don't mind answering a technical question here and there, but I'm less likely to do so when the person asking doesn't put forth any real effort to solve their own problem.

Well sorry..I read those threads last week and didnt recall the topics of them at the time of my last post. I hah it already in my head that they didnt fully apply to what I was trying to do so I ddint reread them.

Ok, I got it now...appreciate the help..

I think my plans have changed..i will get the bridge for the ps2, leave my roadrunner connected to my desktop, and buy the dlink wireless router...

it looks like my notebook card supports "G" as its a DWL-650G DLInk card, should that deter me in picking a wireless router and bridge?

Any ideas on the dual modems, is it even possible to have two?

I don't think your changed plans are going to work for you.

Unless you want to pay Time Warner for a second cable modem service, the second modem is worthless to you. You cannot simply hook it up to a cable outlet and have a second working internet connection.

Leaving your working cable modem connected to your PC is going to prevent any of your other equipment from accessing the internet. Since your cable modem and PC are already in the same room, put your wireless router in there as well.

Cable modem connects to wall with co-axial cable, and to wireless router's WAN port with ethernet cable.

PC connects to one of the router's LAN ports with an ethernet cable.

Laptop connects to wireless router with existing wireless card.

PS2 connects to wireless to ethernet bidge with ethernet cable, which allows a wireless connection to the router.

Done.

Well that is what I am going to do now.

Originally I was going to get the USB adapter for my desktop, run my cable modem into my wirelss router then to my playstation via ethernet, and have my laptop with the card...just for kicks, would that have worked too?

Is buy.com the best place to buy this stuff?
