Road trip

I found out recently that my company is shutting down for 2 weeks end of the year. Tickets to most countries were ridiculously expensive by then so me and couple of my coworkers are now thinking of going on a road trip.

I live in SF, so one idea was Oregon, Idaho, montana, wyoming, utah and back. Has anyone done this during the winter? Are the roads closed? If I did this, I would like to hit up the national parks on the way. Are they open? Is there anything else to do on the way?

Any other suggestions? Doesn't have to be a 2 week trip...a week to 10 days is good.

Thanks!

The weather and road conditions that time of year in the northern Rockies is unpredictable and potentially dangerous. Many mountain passes will be closed. Not sure I'd consider it until summer.

A more southern itinerary including Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Grand Canyon NP, etc. would be much more predictable and the weather more pleasant. You could also take in Yosemite (although I'm sure it's crowded), Sequoia NP, and Kings Canyon. A stop in Las Vegas would also be an option.

that's too bad. I've been to Sequoia, Kings canyon and Yosemite (too many times), so I'd like to go somewhere different. Zion NP and Grand Canyon are good options.

I've been to virtually all of the major NPs and Zion is among my favorites. It's beautiful and the scale makes it more accessible than most. If you can get into the Lodge you'll have a great place to stay.

From that region, the north rim of the Grand Canyon is the better option. If you've never seen it, it's really unbelievable. I had prepared myself for this awesome view and it far exceeded my expectations. From the north rim there are several good hikes to consider and, again, the Lodge is a good option.

If you swing through the Las Vegas area and are interested in engineering marvels, consider a tour of Hoover Dam if they're still being offered.
