river shoes recs

I have to get a good pair of durable river shoes for my next floating trip. I'm tired of having pebbles wedge themselves between my sole and the sandal, so those are out of the question. I've looked at several water shoes, they would certainly solve the pebble problem, but they look a bit restrictive. booties might be the best solution, but then again they don't offer the protection that a shoe does.

anyone have any feedback on an specific model, or perhaps help me tip the scales in the direction of a bootie/sock or shoe?

The best thing for tubing is to bring the ice chest with you in its own tube and prop your feet up on that. After that you are only a "foot" away from living the high life

I went to rei during my lunch break. checked out chaco sandals, they have awesome soles, but they weight a ton. I really like these salomon river shoes. they are quick draining, the soles don't absorb any water, are lightweight, and they offer a great deal of protection. I'm think I'm going to go with those

I have some Columbia's that I like. I probably got them at Academy. They keep all but the silt out and are pretty comfortable. My only complaint is they tend to bite the top of my arch a little bit and chances are I've dropped something on the top of my foot yesterday if things are normal. You need that good seal to keep out the pebbles though and that's the price with that model.

I always wore my wet suit booties when I went tubing, kept my feet from getting burned, and they had carpet soles that allowed me to walk safely on alge covered rocks.

Er, isn't "river shoes" just a clever nickname for "old tennis shoes I don't wear anymore" ?? Who pays for river shoes?

**** it. this isn't my first or last frivolous purchase.

with my luck they'll arrive and be the wrong size, or two shoes belonging to the same foot. and I'll end up having to use some old sneakers as a last resort.

Old sneakers will eventually smell like a rhino's ***.
Proper watershoes dry out properly, and feel comfortable.
And don't smell like rhino ***.

I think you made a good choice. I bought a pair of Adidas Banshees about 3 years ago at REI. They were the prior model to this image. They are similar to the solomans. I take them anywhere there is water. I've canoed the Guad. in them many times, run on the beach in Mexico, and hiked through trails and creeks in Colorado. It is basically a tennis shoe bottom with a real open sandal type top. They are very versitile!

yeah, my current river shoes are a pair of nike air max's that i had 3 years ago. they had a few river rides last summer and 2 so far this summer. i usually hose them off in the backyard afterwards. i used to keep them in my trunk of my car after they dried out. i used to have like 2 pair of river shoes back there.

i have a pair of nike air max motos waiting to fill in the void when these see their last days.....

last time we went tubing, one of the girls in our group lost one of her flipflops on the guadulupe about 1/3 of the way down. as we were leaving the last exit off the river, one of my friends spotted a flip flop floating by itself. it was her other one. amazing. some 3 hours later we ran back into it.

that doesn't happen with river shoes. <G>

these shoes are amazing. lightweight, do not get waterlogged, and they drain quickly. a few times we had to get out of tubes before hitting the rapids so our group could tie up together, I got out to catch everyone and I stood on solid limestone that was covered in algae, I felt a pretty secure grip and didn't slip.

the best thing about them, aside from the fact that they kept all pebbles out, is what when I went to the rope swing and walked up the muddy bank I didn't get any dirt/mud on my feet. the shoes did, but that quickly came off when I jumped back into the water.

these kick so much ***.
