I just looked at the Rivals 100 list for 2013 football recruits.
The Link

Out of 11 Texas recruits, we are favorite to land 8 of them. We already have 3 commits from this group and may have another 3 before end of the month. That's call domination. As long as Mack is here, nobody can take this department from him. This is down right exciting.

And yet we are 13-12 in the last 2 years. Same song, different year. No quarterback, no blocking, nobody can catch the ball. Recruiting is a crap-shoot. If you look on another thread, you will see KSU kicking our *** with a boatload of 2-3 stars. Its about development and creating a killer instinct. This is where we fail. Excuses???

13-12 was the direct result of poor recruiting and evaluations...it's as if some coaches, no longer here, took various recruiting websites as gospel and did not even go on the road to see the players they apparently "wanted."

You can see by the numbers of young guys getting serious playing time that this is no longer the case.

Exactly- we don't hang banners and give out rings for winning a Rivals recruiting challenge. This is fun, but it is about 1/3 of the equation. Coaching and player performance on and off the field matters just as much.

I dont think they took the recruiting services as gospel. Afterall, the film on these guys had to be good or the recruiting services would not have rated them that high. They were not coached up. Jury is still out on the new staff. If we see more of the same, then it appears to be a problem at the top. Does he let his coaches coach, or does he meddle? We'll see. In the meantime, lets give him a raise and an extension...Oh wait.....

Definitely complacency and coaching. Hopefully, the new blood will continue to correct these issues.

There has to be at least a little bit of truth to the idea that Texas players entering the NFL are/were soft.

No....its not a bitter generalization, its just the admittance that they deserve more time. Call it the benefit of the doubt. This is a pivital year for this program. We'll see.

If you can't be excited about the changes the new staff has brought about both on the field and on the recruiting trail you really need to step back from the ledges a bit.

This staff seriously changed the way we've done business in the past and we're seeing the effects of that through the 2012 class and we WILL see it with the 2013 class.

As mentioned above, some coaches put way too much stock in recruiting services and didn't evaluate nearly as much as they needed to. Not only are the coaches that Mack brought in the balls, they're also killing it out on the recruiting trail. We're going after the cream of the crop whether they're from Texas or OOS. You'll see more and more of this in the coming months but rest assured, we're not confining ourselves to the Texas.

Maybe i'm too much of a recruiting junkie but i see serious differences here and i for one am friggin stoked. The first 3 recruits in this class speak volumes about the mindset of the staff and the next 2 to 3 that are about to follow will only solidify that!!

Have the last 2 years on the field been painful? Absofrigginlutely!!! That's also got allot to do with a **** ton of bad recruiting that's already been discussed. Step back from the ledges, these next few years are going to be something SPECIAL and it's only going to build. Grab a drink and enjoy the second season!!

I get that recruiting is only part of the equation. But if you don't have talent, you don't compete. Also, look at the recruiting rankings and most of the time, the programs who show up there consistently in the top tier tend to finish in the top tier.

The past 2 years have not been to our standards. But Gilbert not developing like Mack and most other programs who recruited him like we all thought he would set the program back a couple of years. So you end up having to play a guy at QB who had no preseason reps and is a true Freshman last year. Also, there was some complacency on the part of the old guard of coaches. The new coaches have brought a new energy to the program and very importantly re-energized Mack. If Fozzy hadn't gone down, it could have turned an 8-5 to 10-3.

Sure lets be real. 13-12 is not Texas standards. But based on what's being done, life is too short to dwell on gloom and doom.

That's exactly I am trying say, what the previous two posters said. You couldn't explain it better. It's a special moment and exciting time being a Longhorn fans.

Like I said, we'll just have to wait and see. I really dont know of too many execs that would have recieved a raise and extension after the last 2 years production. Yes, last year was better. New staff will bring in new things. Could it have been much worse than 2010? And there is a difference between meddleing and overseeing. IIRC, there were a few on this very board that thought GD would have opened it up, but Mack was too conservative. Dont know....just sayin....
Here's to 14-0

I question less about who we gave the scholarships to in classes 2007-09, and I question more about how we dveloped those players. After 2 years many weren't much better than they were as a Sr in HS, e.g. Darius White for one.
And I agree, the lack of turn out by GG was the biggest issue and truely set the program back at least 2 years. If this year doesn't turn out well you can argue 3.

Geezer Horn and WGa Horn - You all NAILED it.

" I hate excuses. I dont believe in them."

Aggsux - I think what GH and WGH lay out are facts, and not excuses. As WGH stated, step off the ledge. We have one bad year in 2010, after a decade of 10 win seasons, a MNC, playing for another, and 2 other BCS bowl wins, and now Mack is chopped liver and can't identify talent? This is what makes me ill about UT "fans". The sense of entitlement is almost unbearable. 2010 was bad. We all get it. Mack took real steps to address the issues, and as was stated above, 2011 was a dramatic improvement. I am in the camp that thinks that but for the loss of Fozzy, injuries to Malcom, Bergeron and Jaxon all about the same time, kept us from a 10 win season. That said, what I look at is how the team responded under such adversity. They did not foild, played hard, and with a young team that is huge. That is a direct reflection of the coaching staff that you have repeatedly taken potshots at. I do understand your frustration however, but keep the faith my man! I fully believe that the next five years are going to be a lot of fun for the LH faithful.

I thought it was against state law to "buy out" a contract. Why didnt we buy out Makovick? I thought we had to reassign him.
