RIP Tony's Vineyard

A place in Austin that I really loved, Tony's Vineyard, went out of business some time the past 3 months. They had really great Italian food, made solid coffee (with a hammered copper machine on the bar, like Rome rather than Starbucks). The prices were astonishingly low and the service was solid. I still can't figure out how it did not take off. My only hunch is the location- 29th and Rio Grande. That still should've drawn way more people from the neighborhood across Lamar.

I'll miss that when I go back.

Yea, they had solid food there. I think the problem was it looked really fancy and upscale (even if the prices were decent), and West Campus is not.

Honestly, I thought the food quality went downhill from when Tony's took over for Piccolo.

About three or four years ago, Piccolo was consistently busy. We went there 2-3 times per month. The food was good, and it being across Lamar from our neighborhood, it was convenient. When Tony's took over, the food just wasn't the same, and we got the same strange waiter each time we went. Eventually, it just went off our rotation.

I'm surprised this place stayed open as long as it did. Sorry, but the food was decent at best, the service was poor and they had rats running around the dining area.
