RIP Peter Graves

Well known acto Peter Graves died last night at his home in LA. Best known as super spy Jim Phelps of Mission Impossible. He was 83.

One of my all-time favorite movies, and probably my favorite role of Peter Graves outside of Mission Impossible.

My favorite TV Series as a second and third grader was Mission Impossible. Before that it was "Gunsmoke" starring Graves' brother, James Arness as Matt Dillon.

Not many people know that Peter Graves was James Arness' brother in real life. Graves was his mother's maiden name. the family name was "Aurness". James Arness, as in Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke.

A friend's father was the third brother, but he was a bigwig in the military. You can see the family resemblance - he looks a lot like Peter Graves.

Graves was definitely the little brother. Arness in his prime was 6'7" and beefy. I read once that both brothers were contenders for the Matt Dillon role, but Arness won out because Graves looked "foreign." Maybe Graves' success in Stalag 17 worked against him there.
I guess it worked out for the best. Both were great actors who seemed perfect for their roles. I liked the big, rough Matt Dillon and the strong but more refined Jim Phelps
