Apartheid was a evil system invented by horrible men. Second only to the holocaust and slavery. I can imagine having the balls to stand up to tyranny of that kind knowing at best you would be imprisoned, as worst you would just disappear.

I've been monitoring some of the texags posters on this, and they put stormfront to shame. I plan on posting a more detailed summary shortly.

Courageous non-violence creates enormous moral authority. Forgiveness is made possible the creation of a new nation.

He was a truly great man, and great doesn't seem strong enough. He saw huge social changes in his 96 years, and was instrumental in many of those changes.

A Clinton interview from was shown last night.
former President Clinton clearly admired and respected Mandela
he said Mandela's greatest asset was his ability to forgive mentioning that Mandela had invited his jailers to his inauguration.
Clinton couldn't say enough about how much Mandela gave to the world
.I don't think Bill even used the pronouns I or me.
A really fitting tribute

I didn't especially like Clinton when he was president, but his successors make me nostalgic for a leader with intellect, curiosity and exceptional political skill.

Back on the original topic it has been really enlightening to hear about what a great leader he was - advocating peace with grace in a country of "shouters." The people who knew him before prison said he was that way even then.

RIP Mr. Mandela.

And glad to see that all the living US Prez's (except for 41) are able to go for his services.

Usually somebody famous who did some amount of good dies all of sudden all their good stuff is magnified and all their flaws get swept under the rug I suppose out of what is (I believe a misguided) respect for the dead. I think it's a sign our culture doesn't know how to handle death very well that part of how we handle is it whitewashing the fence of the life we just lost.

But I didn't really know that much about Nelson Mandela - he was president of SA, he helped end apartheid, that's about it. Looking more into the situation, it really did blow me away how much he had to be bitter about, and yet flat-out refused to live with bitterness and taught so many others with legitimate source of anger and grudges to do the same.

It also seems like he not only helped save many who had been wronged by the system from their own unforgiveness, but he also helped save many of those on the privileged end of the system from the corruption that such an evil visits on the minds of those who benefit from it. The majority of people of all races in South Africa were consistently against apartheid in principle, but a lot of them who stood up against it in the end weren't doing a damn thing about it and probably never would have had it not been for Mandela.
