RIP Leon Manley

A boyhood friend of DKR and a teammate at Hollis HS and OU.
He worked in tandem with Coach Zapalac and created all those Wishbone OLs.

This follows the recent loss of Coach Patterson. I miss them both.

I have some good memories of Coach Manley. As a senior in broadcast journailsm, sports emphasis, I opted to do my internship in the SID instead of at a news station. Glenn Brown, he of the dairy lobby and the Exxon Radio Network, used to come by about once a week and leave a large wheel of cheddar cheese. Sometimes I'd sit in the breakroom and eat cheese and talk football with Coach Manley. He recognized my desire to learn, despite being female, and he was patient with my questions. He taught me so much about football.

Rest in peace, my friend, and Hook 'em!

And in case you weren't aware of how intimidating this guy could look, take a look at the 1969 and 1970 national championship team photos, he's the biggun' up front....

oh, i hate to hear that. he was such a big part of darrell's success. two things you could count on from a darrell royal team was great offensive line play and a great kicking game. no, three. great defenses, too.

i used to go watch them practice now and then, and i loved to watch the linemen go at it. one on one, it was like watching heavyweight boxers in fierce combat.

Sounds like he was a quality gentlemen..

I guess what one realizes when you get older and see everything as THE BIG PICTURE...Leon Manley's character and hard work is another piece of why we are what we are today...

Thanks, buddy....RIP

He lived in my neighborhood when I was a kid. I remember waving to him a few times as he watered his lawn. My friends called him "Mr. Manley" and said he was a real nice guy.
