RIP John Updike

A great, great writer. And, as the article states, a man of sometimes questioning, but ultimately sustaining faith.

In the Beauty of the Lilies is one of the finest books I have ever read.

Wow, sad. I got hardcover of the Eastwick sequel for Christmas. I've read every other novel and most of his story collections. I had no other author addiction as I had to Updike, tho most of that was started by Rabbit at Rest, then going back thru that great series, in the 80's. I guess his name is crap in today's literature depts.

His main theme, for me, was that people are incorrigibly themselves. They will screw up horribly. They will suffer for that, as will those around them. They will get through it, if not past it. It won't be the same, but what is.

So much of this pattern in life.

Not a bad writer for an fine art student.

his short stories are great...The Dogwood story is awesome...

Read Rabbit is Rich in a 1980's american literature class. Soon after I had a deeper and richer understanding of my father. Loved the rabbit books and I've always wanted to go out like rabbit in about 50 years.

I didn't always agree with his viewpoint, but he did make the reader think. He didn't write for the mass market that needs its meaningless fluff.

damn, sorry to see him go. he was one of my first favorite authors. I have read just about everything he has written. if you liked him, check out his short novel about his own childhood - Self-Consciousness.

enjoy the rest of the trip, John.
