Ricky Williams - osteopath

Really, I thought it could also be for people who figured out the grind of med school and being an M.D. was not their cup of tea. I know many people that did not want to deal with that crap and went on to do Physical Therapy, Phys. Asst. among other thngs and they never looked back. I think it is unfair to make a statement such as yours as it is flat out not true in most cases.

As long as that person is happy, helps others and does a great job, bravo. There are a lot of shitbirds who have the tag of M.D. next ot their name that are pretty much a waste of time.

I would be pissed if I was a student and you blathered on about football if I paid my own tuition. And the math teachers I know would have gone on about the oval shape of the football and how VY defies physics and motion.

Hey, give me my dirt back, thief!!!

think someone needs some osteopathy

Osteopaths (and their red-headed stepchildren, chiropractors) were into alternative medicine before it was cool. Good for Ricky if he wants to be a doc. I know of another former Horn who went to DO school, did "MD" postgrad training, and is now a spine surgeon.

I thought about doing a lesson on why Vince Young was a horrible passer and break down the trajectory of his passes, but then he had to go and get all good.

Hate to threadjack, but I would just like to clear a few things up. After my degree from The University of Texas, I continued my education and pursued a career as a physician. Currently, I am finishing my last year of medical training at an Osteopathic Medical school. I will be a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) in less than 8 months, and have already been offered positions at many Allopathic (MD) as well as dually accredited (MD/DO) Residencies. The training I have gone through is exactly what Allopaths (MDs) go through, PLUS extra training in musculo-skeletal and manipulative medicine. I have taken both Step 1 and Step 2 of the MD AND DO board exams. I will work side by side with MDs, and no one will get any less medical care than they would had they gone to my allopathic counterpart.

DO's perform surgery, we prescribe medicine, we deliver babies, we do everything an MD does. I have spent 4 years in medical school just like MD students have. I, like many osteopathic students, chose to attend a DO school because we liked what the school had to offer as far as extra musculoskeletal and manipulative training, the success of their students in the real world, their board pass rate, as well as location. I got accepted to MD schools as well, but unlike a certain poster suggested, I chose Osteopathic training for the EXTRA training I would be doing, rather than not being "good enough for MD school." The training we receive in manipulation is just another tool we have for diagnosis as well as treatment. Some DO's choose to practice it, others choose not to.

The original poster added a link that can be somewhat misleading as far as training and scope of practice. Try this one to get a feel for what an actual Osteopathic Physician is:
DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine)

I encourage everyone to check out a DO sometime. You might be surprised at the level of care you are given. I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have about Osteopathic Medicine. I don't mean to come off sounding like an *******, but I figured this would be a good opportunity to inform a few more people about the great Osteopathic Physicians that are out there, and what it seems, Ricky might be running for next!

Best wishes to Ricky Williams if in fact he is serious about pursuing a career as a physician, Osteopathic or Allopathic. I would love to have him as a colleague.

I respect Ricky williams as a running back and a longhorn, but I'm not sure I want to go to any doctor (MD or DO) that was taking pre-algebra at the age of 31. What the hell was he taking at UT? I think i took that class in middle school.

I know of a doctor that still plays Dungeouns and Dragons. Addicted to it. But you would never know. I just want somebody who is professional and able to do their job as a doctor when working. I don't care what they did to get there or in their free time (within reason) as long as I get proper attention.

As LonghornAnth pointed out, DO's are doctors too. I'm not too familiar with their training since I'm one of those shitbags with an MD, but I'm in a residency program that is almost 70/30 MD's/DO's and I have to say the DO's here are pretty outstanding docs. As for being offered positions as a 4th year med student, I'm sure he meant to say he was offered interviews for the position. MD programs will usually interview 100-300 med students for 5-20 spots. The MD match doesn't happen til March. Either way, best of luck to you in the match. As for Ricky, I'm a huge fan of what he does on the field and if he's able to suffer the grind of med school and residency to become a practicing physician then he's definitely earned it.

Perhaps he meant to say homeopathic medicine. His experience with herbs should help him there.

Pre-Algebra?

I like Ricky and all... but how do you get into UT not having pre-algebra under your belt. I took pre-algebra in middle school. Is this preferential treatment towards football players, OR do we really accept students without this kind of basic math understanding. I don't care if you are going into elementary education or children's literature, you need to know basic math.

1. Those who go to DO school in general are those who cannot get into an MD medical school. That is not to say that they are not smart. Some may have not applied themselves or are not good test takers.
2. Training at DO schools and residencies is not as good. For instances the brightest DO graduates will seek to do MD residencies. It never happens the other way around.
3. So in general, MDs are brighter and better trained. That being said, I know some excellent DOs that I would refer patients to, and some MDs I would never.
4. DOs don't like this, but these are the facts.

So Longhornanth-- what's your take on chiropractors?

I sounds like you guys can do both
