we had a good run of TEs with pat fitzgerald, derek lewis, bo scaife, david thomas, jermichael finley. blaine irby had a good streak of big plays towards the end of last year. Its hard to imagine what could have been had he not been injured so badly.

this year DJ grant had brief flashes as well (3TDs vs UCLA). we'll see how he does next year and if MJ McFarland can live up to his hype.

Finley is the last great TE we have had. He left early or he would have been all-American for sure. Unfortunately those guys don't come around as often as you like. One of the trends in the NFL is getting a guy that is 6-6 or taller and has huge hands or plays basketball as well. These guys have the body/frame, pass catching ability, and basketball sense of using their body to create space/position. McFarland is in that mold and is 6-6 per Mack's site.. I am looking forward to what he can do.

In the future if we can find guys that our 6-6 or 6-7 then they will be difficult to cover by a 6-0 DB/safety or 6-3 LB. Looking at our current TEs on the roster Graham is 6-5, Howard is 6-4 and the rest are 6-3 or 6-2. I just don't think 6-2 or 6-3 is the ideal size for a TE these days. I understand that Scaife and Thomas were both 6-3 but DBs and LBs are just bigger these days and the TEs that are most effective are simply bigger as well now.
