Rick Perry - President of the United States

Is it not obvious to everyone that Rick Perry's tour for Giuliani through Iowa, N.H., S.C. and now Florida is a thinly veiled start to a 2012 (if dem victory this year) campaign for prez? Seems pretty damn obvious to me. I read a article in the DMN about a speech that Perry was giving to GOP power brokers in SC in December where he apparently barely mentioned Rudy and the attendees told the reporter that they were ready to open their checkbooks to Perry wishing he was running.

Good god, will this dude ever fade away? He has been governor for like 100 years. Apparently, he has hinted to Kay Bailey that he is considering running AGAIN. WTF?!? That would be three and a half terms. If he did run it would be political suicide, Hutchison would smoke his *** in the primary. But the mere thought that he is even considered it shows that he is thinking about the presidency as he would probably want to be a sitting governor ala W during his run.

Knee jerk response would be that Perry would not stand a chance, but picture him against the current crop of candidates. He has would get the social con vote (pro-life) as he seems more mainstream and electable than Huckabee. he would get the fis con vote as he has managed to maintain the fiction of lower taxes by just throwing up tolls on every new road. Nor would he scare the national defense cons, I am sure Perry could talk very well about hunting al-queda to the gates of hell.

In short, he would appeal to each branch of the GOP, whereas each of the other candidates come up short somewhere. I think that if Perry was running, he might have a good chance this year of getting the nomination. I think that he knows that. Thus, he is already planning for '12.

Apart from Rick's unique baggage, voters will be in no hurry to elect another Texas governor. Bush will cast a shadow which will be tough to escape for quite a while. Just a hunch.

Somehow I don't think he will take that sterling 38% mandate (or whatever percentage of the vote he had in the last election) out anywhere outside of Texas and parade like he has a chance. I could be wrong, but I don't think Perry could even win re-election as governor.

Then again, he IS an ex-aggie corps turd, so God only knows what lurks in his brain......

It would actually be pretty funny to see him try to run for president. The other candidates would treat him like a joke and then kill him.

I think it will be a long time before the American voter will put a Texan in the White House again. LBJ & GWB to thank...

Ok, so I'm curious ...

What states do you think the D is going to win?

It will play out the way it always plays out. The D will win the Northeast and the West Coast. The R will win the South and the West. There will be a little bit of a battle in the Midwest. It's so predictable is ridiculous.

And of course, US policy, whether domestic or international won't change a whit regardless of who is president.

I think I'm already on record as saying that the whole thing comes down to Florida and Ohio (and a few other minor states with very few electoral college votes; Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada, maybe Colorado -- if the D can swing another midwestern state -- then maybe, but I doubt it).

I am a staunch Republican and there is no way I would support Perry unless the competition was, well I don't know what. I hope he realizes that if KBH were to run for Governor then he would be out.

Now if you want to talk KBH for President then I will listen. I think she would do well if she had the backing.

Again -- I am not predicting that Perry will EVER win the presidency. I don't know how much more plain I can put that. I am just suggesting that Perry's actions indicate that he is planning a run in 2012 -- if a dem wins-- and that based on the current GOP candidates, he would appeal to more conservatives than you would think.

I think that if he managed to get the nomination he would be smoked by an incumbent D pres barring some unforseen national incident

Praise: why do you even bother with discussion of presidential politics. All you ever do is threadshit every thread that discusses anything to do with a national election with the BS about the electoral college. Clinton won two terms with the basic demographic that the country has. Moreover, those demographics are changing -- NM which Bush carried becomes more blue every year -- Florida now has 41% of electorate as registered democrats as opposed to 37% who are registered republicans. Not to mention the turnouts on the dem side in the primaries are bad news for the pubs (an uncontested Fla democratic primary has basically drawn as many dem voters as GOP voters in a hotly contested battle).

I am a republican, but I see the writing on the wall. There is no lock on the electoral college for the GOP far from it. This will be an uphill fight to win the white house.

I would really love to meet the rich morons who would be fool enough to bankroll a Presidential campaign for Rick Perry.

God, please make this happen. That would ******* rule
