Rick Carlisle

Obviously the players are the ones that have to make the plays, but in every sport the Coach is the head of the snake. And Rick Carlisle came in and picked up the meltdown that was the Dallas Mavericks.

He put together a team. And by put together I mean created the chemistry of a winning team.

He has 10 players that are capable of playing and contributing.

Dirk: The Star. The Warrior. Double teamed? No problem.

J-Kidd: The Vet PG. Complete QB. Shoots the 3 without hesitation.

J-Ho: A hoopsta who was at the bottom of the heap but who was given the confidence, the responsibility that he was important. And he was.

Jet: 6th Man of the Year. Consumate Team player. Dagger 3's.

JJ Barea: Fearless. Drives to the hole. Doesn't know he's not supposed to be good.

Damp: Confidence that he really can control the middle. Plays 41 minutes in Game 5 vs Spurs. Are you kidding me?

A.Wright: Aggy shows that trading Devin Harris is okay for now. Big shots and Defensive shutdowns.

Bass/Singleton/Hollins: ENERGY and big plays.

Carlisle molded all these guys into playing together and creating the chemistry to be a really good team. He turned the QBing over to Kidd something that the Little General never would've done. In the past, Defense was talked about. This year it was put into motion.

Split the first two games on the road vs Spurs? Not good enough. Changed his lineup, inserting Barea who promptly lead the stomping that was Game 3 and continued for the final two wins.

This team has chemistry and talent. And a good coach ready to call the shots.

Good enough to beat the Nuggets? Who knows. But they are jacked and ready for now. Stay tuned.

heard on radio today that the Mavs have the best record in the league since March 31st. talk about peaking at the right time! I think they have a decent shot at the Nuggets/Hornets. If they get past them, their confidence level will be pretty high, but I think winning two games against the Lakers would be considered exceeding expectations.

Its was a welcome relief not watching Avery Johnson getting completley outcoached in the playoffs...which had become an annual occurence.

I think Carlisle has done a damn good job this year, because I still contend this is one of the least talented Mavs team weve had this decade.

Other teams have screwed up and cut Carlisle loose. Here's hoping Cuban knows what he has in Carlisle, a coach who can take the talent he's given and win with it, no matter what style he has to coach. Is he one of the best coaches in the league? Who knows. One of the best ever on the Dallas bench? Absolutely. The Mavs are deep, and if they get a little younger in the next few years, they'll be a tough out for anybody.

I'm pretty sure Cuban knows what he has as coach. He made a great case for hiring him and this guy has proven him correct.

A friend of mine had these comments:

Carlisle lets the guys play. He's repeatedly adjusted. He has taken 2 teams to the finals. He was coach of the year once.

He brought in the motion offense that the players had no clue about. He drops that in the first month but still runs many of his plays and the mavs can't hardly reach 500. He brings back the old nellie high post pick and roll which is Dirk's bread and butter mid year and starts playing Barrea more. Bareea can run the dive in and dish out like nash - that Kidd can't.

Then he let's JK call plays in Feb - big change - its JK's team. JJ still gets called from the bench. They run more. Kidd mentors JJ and JJ's confidence starts to soar. (see larry's fearless line). Then 2 weeks ago carlisle calls daly who tells him to erase the board (meaning - in the end its not about plays and xes and os) Erase the pregame standard issue NBA board outlining strategies. Mavs score 270 points in the next 2 games - swagger is there.

Here comes the playoffs. Pop schemes to stop Dirk and terry. Double Dirk from 3 point line in - same as terry. 9 players play. Pop plays old school with Bowen and K Thomas - those guys did not play those minutes in regular season (per today's SA Express)

Game 5 Pop adopts carlisle's strategy - no more doubles (except natural ones on drives). Parker tries to be Kidd and dish - ok - Duncan gets 30 (not 4) - but game 5 is mano -on mano. both teams just playing their games and the coaches stayed out of it except for matchups. Pop decideing to play Hill and bench Gooden. (going smaller) - They even had a mini run in the second half with Duncan and 4 smalls. again Pop playing Mavs ball.

Carlisle should be flattered. (so should Nellie)

Parker says after game they would not have won even with ginobli.

I miss Avery though. He got too full of himself after going to the finals his first year. His second year he was more general than little. The players win games. Coaching is around the edges. The players took the Mavs to Miami - it was a Nellie team that Avery helped around the edges - making them a bit tougher and better defensively.

He was too controlling after that. Devin never would have blossomed under THAT Avery. Avery will be different the next time he coaches. Let's hope he does soon. He'll be better.

Sefko said it was a "heat of the moment" comment. Not sure how that would happen. Unless it was just kinda more internal motivation to get this team to get all they can.

You area also forgetting that Devin could do all these things better than jason kidd:

-Score for himself
-Score in the paint
-Break down the opposing defense by getting in the lane
- Be a threat to score 20 to 30 points a night
- Be able to defend Tony Parker

if you look at Tony Parkers performaces against the Mavs he has killed us in the years before and after Devin Harris was in a Mavs uniform.

Im glad Jason Kidd hit some wide open threes this past series, but i still think it was a horrible trade for the Mavs. If we had traded for Chauncy Billups I think we would have won 55 to 60 games this year.

I didn't forget those things. That's why I said Harris plays tighter defense and scores by going to the basket. He may be capable of scoring 20-30, but with us he averaged 14, only 3 more than Kidd. The offense that Kidd generates is far more than Harris.

When I saw Rick Carlisle's name I thought-

1) I wonder if he's coaching in the league right now? If not, I won't if this is going to be a thread about the Mavs being interested in picking him up when the season is over.

...then...

2) I wonder who the coach of the Mavs IS this year? I'm pretty sure Avery's gone.

It just goes to show you that if you stop following a sport after referees steal a champeeenship from your team using the power of the whistle and then you move to another continent, you aren't always "up to date" on your old teams.
