This game is pretty sloppy so far.

My high-school gym as better lighting than Rice's home court. On TV it appears that only half the lights are turned on.

I like Brown running this team from the point. If he will get rid of some of the street ball moves, he can be a great PG. Very surprised at his ability to dish the rock.

Also, Brown needs to work on his maturity. He seems to have this personal battle going on with the Rice PG. I don't mind a little competitiveness, but don't do anything stupid, J'Covan.

Nice to see that Rick at least acknowledged that the offense was pretty bad in that interview. Not sure why we seem to consistently struggle with the offense... even against freakin' Rice.

J'Covan has been a turnover machine this year. Once he gets that under control he'll be all right, but he really needs to protect the rock.

Looks like a playground game. Don't know if this team could play any worse. They may be talented but they sure need to learn some discipline.

gary johnson seems to be playing an entirely different game than everyone else. i mean that as a bad thing, by the way. the dude is killing offensive efficiency down the stretch, as he shoots the ball every time he touches it. confidence is good, but he lives in some fantasy world where he's actually a scorer. what that's based on, i don't know.

maybe its best i'm not watching, this games is giving me a heart attack. j'covan sounds like he's taking over down the stretch.

We're going to have to accept that Barnes is about defense and effort. He is not an offensive guru. The fact is (in my opinion) our offense over the years only worked with TJ and DJ; two elite point guards who could create on offense. Without that kind of player, we are going to flounder and rely on one on one moves or a hot shooting night. Hopefully Jai is the answer.

Yeah, still lots of issues. A few observations:

1. Bradley cannot find his shot. He is playing like a really good glue guy (with great defense, blocks, and awesome entry passes to Dex). Unfortunately the #1 HS player in the country should not be a glue guy.

2. Hamilton is an awesome 3 point shooter, but that is it so far. If he is going to go the next level, he needs to put the trigger finger away and play in an offense.

3. Speaking of which, we have no offensive set. After we play a terrible first half, we go to a "feed the ball to Dex" offense. Don't get me wrong, that is a great offense, but we need to have different sets and run different plays out of those sets.

4. Damion James, you are a senior. You should not have these types of games where you disappear (ala Oklahoma and A&M games last year).

5. J'Covan Brown is probably our best all-around offensive player. He can create for himself and can dish the rock. He needs to quit playing like this is a pick up game and take things a little more seriously.

6. Jai Lucas will add to this team, but he is not going to run an offense like TJ and DJ. He can shoot the 3, which we desperately need to add to the team (as long as he plays within the offense while shooting 3s). But he is not going to be a great "drive to the basket and break down the defense type of guy." However, with Lucas, Brown and Hamilton on the floor, no team will dare play a zone against us.

7. Is it time for Justin Mason to sit the bench and play maybe 8-10 minutes a game? I am not sure what he brings to the table. He cannot shoot. He cannot make free throws. Balbay, Bradley, and probably Brown are better on the ball defenders. Hate to say this about a senior who has given so much to the program, but he has regressed and should really not crack the top 8 on this team once Lucas comes back.

BB16,

Just got back from the game also. I concur with your comments. Damion seems to go in a shell for awhile. Dexter is still not getting great entry passes. Some of the freshman got schooled by Rice, which led to some easy dunks and layups.

Don't know why the rest of the team doesn't just watch J'Covan Brown's mechanics for free throw shooting.

Dude is going to be like AJ shooting free throws. Of course, as mentioned above, he does turn over too much, playing street ball, but he can also create and made a real sweet pass to Dogus for a nice layup. He's not TJ or DJ, but he will improve.

Dexter seems to have improved his free throws, but the rest of team needs a lot of work.

I would say you have to give Rice credit. Their coach had them playing our bigs well on defense.

As to the poster above asking about Varez Ward. No he didn't play any minutes.

Crappy opponent, crappy venue, Sunday afternoon throw away game....meh, we still walked out with an 18 pt win. I'm not too worried.

Good God.....Rice students annoy the hell out of me.
