Rice v. Army

Probably won't last but with less than 4 minutes left in the first quarter. Rice's defense is absolutely stuffing Army (which went 11-2 last year). Rice went 2-11 last year.

I knew things were too good to be true. Army just gained 35 yards on a reverse on third and nine. And then a 17 yard pass down to the Rice 3 yard line. TD on next play. 16 play, 95 yard drive, that took almost 10 minutes.

Rice just answered with a pretty pass and then, on the next play, a 54 yard TD run. Problem is that drive was too brief, and the Rice defense is probably still gassed.

Rice looking good so far. Did The Mob travel to West Point ? I look forward to halftime at NRG in a couple weeks

Rice recovers Army fumble with 5 and a half minutes left in the third. It's still 7-7. Two good runs for Rice. Now down to Army 39 yard line. Army stuffed them on third down. Rice has to punt. Army has to start inside its own five. Rice stuffed them again. Army punting from back of end zone. Rice returns it to Army 35. End of third. Still 7-7. Rice has to punt again. Downed inside Army five again. Army starting to move now. Rice still fighting but beginning to tire.

Sounds kinda' boring.

I love close games, so I'm excited at how well Rice is hanging in there and playing great defense despite being a three touchdown underdog. Absent that perspective, much of the game would, indeed, be boring. Army has third and eight inside Rice 20 with 4 minutes to go. 17 yard TD pass. 14-7 with 3:58 to go in game. Rice runner gets nice 15 yard run on first down. He's at 9 carries for 103 yards. Another Rice runner gets 7 on next play. Then, false start, second and 8. PI on Army. Rice has first down inside Army territory. After another run, Rice is inside the Army 40. Now to 35. First down with a minute and a half remaining. Rice QB just dropped the ball (by bouncing it off his thigh) while scrambling, but Rice recovered it. 1:16 to go. 4th and one. Incomplete play action pass. That'll do it.

I did not get to watch the game...was the Rice D that much better compared to years past or did Army lose an offense over the summer? Line on this one was greater than the combined total in the actual final, and Army had also hung 70 on Cougar High in the bowl game.

If the Rice D is actually this good, then there is some meat on that bone from which funds may be had...

Rice D played very well. They had spent a lot of time preparing for the triple option offense. Rice D is much better than last year’s D.

Refs screwed up that play where Rice fumbled. That was a change of possession . It should have been 1st and 10 for Rice, not 2nd and 12. That could have made a difference ....Rice ended up 4th and 1, and failed to convert.... refs owe rice an apology ....

Defending the option = disciplined assignment defense. It’s hard to do when you only see one or two option teams per year. Of course if you happen to have stud DTs than can push the OL backwards and disrupt things from the start at the first QB read (dive), that’s another way to shut it down. Rice doesn’t have that luxury, so we know their defense is at least well coached.

Did Rice fumble to Army and Army possessed it before fumbling it back?
