Rex Burkhead

Watched some of the Plano vs. Plano-East game tonight during breaks in the USC-Oregon St. game.

Man, I wish we could find room for Burkhead in our '09 class. That kid is a football player, pure and simple. Most casual observers see only his skin color, height, and weight and don't appreciate how athletic and explosive he is.

Whoever signs him is going to have themselves a real gamer, whether he ends up playing RB, WR, or DB.

I have been following Burkhead for a couple of years since I live in the Dallas area and can see him play some & read his press clippings. Your right, the kid is a gamer - a winner. Loves the game. I agree he could play RB, WR, slot WR, utility man or perhaps even DB. I have thought for some time he reminds me of Wes Welker - perhaps Rex is a little bigger. IMO Horns would do well to find room to take this kid.

Good information. Unfortunately scholarships are limited but it sounds like he would be a good one to get if we have one to spare if he is interested.

Rex doesn't have any Welker in his game, except maybe the fact that they both play PR. Welker is speed, Burkhead maybe runs a 4.7 with the wind behind him. And I say this as a Plano grad/fan.

Burkhead is more about leadership and taking the game over when nothing else is working. He'll get those 6 yards if you needed 5. He'll take the hits and show the rest of the team that it's not that bad.

Plus, we have a stable of RBs, WRs, and DBs sitting around waiting to play at Texas.

I watched the game also the other night and it is pretty obvious that Burkhead runs alot faster than that, I would have put him easily in the 4.5's just by watching him. I saw him play against Temple when Plano came down and he looks like a high 4.4 or low 4.5 guy with a great first 20 yard burst

Guy reminds me of Trey Newton. Pretty quick and overall a good back, but mostly just a competitor. They both new how to win and get the extra yard that kept drives going. I don't know how much of that will translate to playing time for either, but they are the kind of guys you sure love having in the locker room and on the bench in case you need them.
I hope Burkhead continues to impress and can eventually be a top recruit because he is such a good kid.

He may end up like the Oregon State kid. Not really recruited that heavily by the top tier programs, but gets some attention later for whooping a top 10 team's ***. I just hope we are not the team on the other end. Whatever happens i wish him the best, he seems like a genuinly good kid.

Burkhead has legit D-1 size strength and speed and is being recruited by several big D-1 schools. This thread makes him sound like an unheard of overachiever that outworks his opponent. There's a reason he's run all over teams like DeSoto and Skyline who are full of D-1 recruits.................He's a strong/fast/quick D-1 recruit.

4.7?
Rex runs a 4.5 and high 4.4's

He could play for Texas, this year, at 3 different positions. He would compete at Safety, WR, and RB. He would defintely see snaps at Safety

We recruit way too many guys who are spec guys. They may be big, tall and fast - but can't catch the football. Rex isn't going to be a guy who gets on campus and people say, "whatever happened to that guy?" He will contribute wherever he goes

He's definitely smart enough to learn a defense, and he's built like a safety. He hasn't played it in a while, but that might fuel his learning curve.

That said, he'd be behind every single safety on our two-deep right now, because he'd be coming in here next year behind a bunch of true and rs sophs.

Playing against tough high school competition definitely gives him a leg up on other recruits.

Burkhead was at the game on Saturday ...talked with Major, Bobby Kennedy and Coach Brown

I get the feeling the staff may be waiting to see if some guys fall through and then perhaps offer Rex ... .then again - maybe they'll offer him now.

A lot of people believe that if Texas offers Rex ...he just may accept.

Yeah if I had to guess, I'd say they're probably keeping up his hopes so that they could snatch him if someone else doesn't follow through.

We're so stacked at every position that he could possibly play. Even the ATH spots on the team are kind of full with Hales and others waiting around. Although I'd love it if he went to Texas, I see far more playing time elsewhere... maybe even A&M.

I think Rex plays wherever he goes ...Texas included.

The kid is just a football player and they'll find a place for him to contribute

He's from my Alma Mater and my Alma Mater does produce Longhorn Football players often. I'd love to see him at the 40 acres.

Coming from Plano, putting up the #'s he has for 3 years he can play for Texas. Not that he would be a star but he can contribute and will get to somewhere.

SigPi_Horn - i graduated from PSHS as well... PSHS doesn't produce UT players often. since 1996, never. am i missing someone? J Blalock was from Plano, but east. Keenan Robinson is also from PESH.

Curtis Jackson - 92-96
Mike Breslin - 92-94

and then some guys in the 80s

Burkhead ran for 125 yards, logged another 163 yards receiving, and scored four TDs in Plano's opening round playoff win over Duncanville last night.

The more I see of this kid, the more I want to see him in burnt orange and white.

I agree with PFD. This kid is a stud, a gamer and a winner and I too would like to see him in burnt orange

"As a Husker fan I don't mind feeding from the table scraps of the Longhorns." ___I wouldn't mind him at Neb, though I really don't think of him as table scraps for anyone. I'll love to have him and I'm sure Mack would too. Not, however, if it means tossing someone already committed just to make room. Timing may be our enemy...
