Revoked scholarship story

The rule of scholarships is that they awarded as one year "merit based" from an academic and athletic participation standpoint. But how many kids do you think are "pushed out" by incoming freshman?

I know for some of these "outgoing" students they just mess up (crime, grades, etc) or legitimately want more playing time (ie RBs and QBs at USC); but how many do you think are "pushed out"? At Texas? at OU? Florida? I believe Mack to be a standup guy and this to be more of a problem with basketball programs than football programs (85 schollies vs 13) but just something to think about... freaking offseason....

I guarantee you some were pushed out. I can't go on saying which ones, but there is some definite merit to the whole "we're not going to renew your scholarship this year" talk.

Some of these get turned into the nice "grade casualty" or lack of playing time reasons, but in reality were just on Mack's s-list for some reason or another and got booted. Mack's not an a-hole, so we always come up with those press releases about why players leave the team, but they tend to leave out specifics.

Is there anything that would prevent the school from taking the kid off of the team and putting him on another non-sports scholly? I thought this was how it was handled, unless the kid wanted to keep playing the sport, in which case the announcement that he had decided to move on.

I think Mack has said before that it would be suicide to take away scholarships from good kids who are doing well in school. The football coaches in the high schools would remember.

A lot of kids are probably told in no uncertain terms that they will never start for the University of Texas. So if that is "pushed out" then so be it.

I just see it as being honest with kids that they do not have enough talent or drive to start. We have seen how Mack tends to be a lot more honest when he recruits the kids, such as telling them that they will only play at wide receiver or DB when they want to play QB, for example.

It is interesting to me that there is a consistent "thank you" and we love Texas from the kids who choose to transfer vs. the ones push out due to character issues. This is different from OU for example where a lot of kids have complained about this coach or that.

Do I think everyone is as happy as they seem? Of course not, but I do believe Mack plays straight up with everyone and he expects players to play straight up with him.

If Texas revoked scholarships from kids who are putting in the work in practice and doing well in the classroom, we'd hear about it. Texas has a big target on it's back.

If kids screw up in either area, yeah, I could see them being pushed out. No one will listen to some kid who skips practice or class and wants to whine about losing his schollie. However, plenty of media outlets will give the mike to a kid who did everything right except earn a starting spot.

I would think any school which played loose with scholarships in revoking them would get severely punished in following recruiting seasons. There has to be fairness in the process or high school coaches would never steer a player to that school again.
Some may not like having to obey rules of conduct and feel they were "pushed out," but I bet there was some pretty good justification for not renewing the scholarship.

Mack has said this before and it has been established in his career at Texas, he never (NEVER) takes away scholarships from kids who are progressing in school and are coming to practice and doing what the coaches tell them.
So even if a student might never see any playing time, he will not have his scholarship taken away. Mack established this early at Texas as a way to guarantee parents that if their child does what he is supposed to, we will never pull his scholly and he would be able to get a degree. This is one of the best ways Mack has been able to establish a good reputation with parents and HS coaches because they are comforted in the fact that atleast if the kid doesnt f up, he will get a degree and wont need to get recruited again. Other schools have been known to pull schollys because coaches found out that they got a lemon and they could use the scholly to get someone better. Mack has said that if we made a mistake in evaluating a kid, its our mistake but we will honor our promise to the kid as long as he works hard academically and listens to his coaches.
This, based on what I have constantly heard, has been why Mack is considered a better coach and a better person than, say, Les MIles who has taken away schollys of kids even when they did what they were asked to(i dont remember specifics here, but i know it happened like 4-5 yrs ago?)..
Someone correct me if Im wrong and provide more precise details please...

I seem to recall Mack honoring scholarships of players injured before they got in one game-wasn't that the case with that good DE from Oklahoma that suffered a career-ending injury?
He doesn't yank the scholarship for that reason.

I think it is some of all of the above. I think Mack is honest with the kids. I just think he is extra forthcoming with some. Evey kid wants to believe he is "in the mix" or wil have the opportunity to get into the mix. They do not always know when that window closes for good. I think makes sure he tells them. The staff may also log some hours doing their best to help the kid land somewhere else that will fit their future needs and desires. For some of those kids, I'm sure the path gets greased nicely to give them a smooth and successful transition (which opens up a ship at Texas). It also leaves the kid feeling appreciative and thankful. Win/Win - whether you call it pushed out or not.

Isn't this what set off Mike Gundy at OSU (not scholarships but a kid who was doing everything right in practice and in class getting ripped)? I imagine almost every coach will stand up for those kids. They chose those kids to be on their team so if you do that enough it would tell your administration you aren't good at evaluating players.

"I guarantee you some were pushed out."

So of all these kids getting screwed over at UT, not a single one or their parents have come forward to complain or gone to the press?
