Revisiting the Ravi Case

Flashback to the case involving the guy that put the web cam in the dorm room of his gay roommate during a sexual liason. Apparently, there was no sexual contact in the video but the kid was embarrassed and jumped off a bridge. Ravi has been charged with a host of crimes, most are probably valid but I hate this hate crime charge. Unfortunately for him, he commited a political crime. he could face 10 years in prison for pulling the prank. it was a cruel prank but it should not have resulted in the kid jumping off the bridge. he clearly had other issues as did the kid that set up the camera. It's funny, a kid raised in an era of voyeurism is being charged with a hate crime for voyeurism.

He intenetionally plays a horrendously cruel "prank" and emotionally damages someone so severely that he committed suicide! 10 years is a minimum this a-hole should serve.

1. do you really believe he emotionally damaged the kid so much that he killed himself...especially considering there was no actual video of anything of a sexual nature on the video?

2. would a reasonable person of sound mind jump off a bridge because of embarassment?

3. 10 years is hard time. drunk drivers that kill people, drug pushers/dealers, rapists, armed robbers and burglars and hamburglars for that matter dont serve that kind of time. should we increase the time felons like these serve?

I think the question that goes ignored here is why it seems that suicide is a more viable option today than it has been in the past.

After falling over 28% during the period 1990 - 2003, suicide rates in America for males and females aged 10-24 climbed 8% - this is the largest single one-year rise in 15 years, says a CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) report 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)'.

In 1990 the suicide rate for 10-24 year-olds was 9.48 per 100,000 people; in 2003 it fell to 6.78 per 100,000 people; in 2004 it rose to 7.32 per 100,000 people.
