Restaurants in S.A.

Wfe and kids and I will be in San Antonio most of next week. I'd greatly appreciate any and all suggestions on restaurants with good mexican food. Will be at the Hyatt Hill Country part of the time and a Riverwalk hotel part of the time.

Thanks!

I went to some place called Azuca last time I was in San Antonio - very good. I don't know if I would call it Mexican though - it has a lot of Caribbean and South American influence.

Dont eat Tex mex on teh river walk. That's like eating italian in Times Square. I like Los Barios on Blanco inside the loop.

La Fogata (twin towers margarita is awesome)- I-10 and 410 area. Can't remember what the name of the street is.

El Mirador on Fridays has potato enchiladas on their lunch menu. They sound wierd but they are great. It is on St. Mary's one block south of Durango. At night it turns into a more upscale place that gets good reviews, but I can't attest to the night time quality and/or atmosphere.

LaFonda on Main just north of downtown is pretty good as well.

This comes up fairly frequently, so you may want to do a search on this board for "San Antonio."

The Hyatt Hill Country is a bit out there so most recommendations will be more convenient when you are downtown.

Keep in mind that Mexican and Tex-Mex are different beasts, and also that opinions vary a great deal. For example, Midtown mentioned Los Barrios, which gets pimped at a trustworthy frequency by both HornFans and other personal sources. Though I could eat Mexican or Tex-Mex every day, I don't like Los Barrios at all, and would pretty much prefer to go almost anywhere else. Others obviously swear by it, so you may want to check it out and decide for yourself.

As for some places that I do like -

Burgers:
Chris Madrid's
Chester's
Flips

Mexican and/or Tex-Mex:
Rosario's (arguably the best choice within walking distance of the River Walk)
Picante Grill (excellent cheese enchiladas with red chile sauce)
La Fonda on Main (avoid other locations)
La Paloma Blanca (nice interior Mexican)
Martha's (great cheesy/greasy and cheap, best fresh/uncooked salsa in town)

Barbecue:
Harmon's in Cibolo (worth the drive; haven't been to the branch across from the Alamo, so try it at your own risk)
Barbecue Station (not comparable to Cooper's, Kreutz's, or Mueller's, but very much above average if you find yourself on the NE side of town; pork ribs have been excellent lately)
BBQ Patio (slightly better than Barbecue Station, up there with Harmon's; far southside)

Italian:
Sorrento
Paesano's

River Walk - my standard advice is to avoid eating on the river at all costs. The food is geared for tourists, and the quality suffers. If you have the kids in tow, you'll likely want to stick to the chains (Rain Forest Cafe, County Line, etc.). If you and the wife can sneak away, there are a few quieter and more romantic options on the St. Mary's end.

some great recommendations so far. from someone thats lived here 7 yrs, after 18 in austin, i'll throw in acenar and el mirasol. the riverwalk is not as bad as people make it out. boudros is excellent, las canarias, pesca, cirrus, and biga can be pricey but a nice meal, casa rio is classic texmex. food is nothing to write home about but, the atmosphere is worth a visit. mi tierra is not just for tourists. excellent food and atmosphere. its not on the river, but in the mercado, which can be fun. they also just opened a new museum there thats worth a visit.

as for restaraunts around hhc, i would suggest taking 151 to 1604 to paesanos, reggianos, rudys, scenic loop, grey moss, etc. nothing on 151 or 410 worth mentioning.

Some of those places that blkshoes mentioned are on the St. Mary's end of the Walk, which I noted was a good way to avoid the more touristy joints. One note about Acenar, try the tuna margarita, but avoid the Parrilla.

I used to be a big Mi Tierra fan. I love Market Square in general, but my past few experiences at Mi Tierra have been very disappointing. The service has been ridiculously poor, and the food was not up to previous standards. I have been going there off and on for over 25 years. It has evolved a great deal. I consider it somewhat akin the the Salt Lick. A great experience, especially for out-of-towners, but there are better places to eat that type of food.

Thank you folks! I knew I could get that question answered here!

River wise I didn't mention the "finer" eating establishments because he had kids and was looking for tx-mex. Pesca and Boudros are both good.

Acenar is good but more for the grown-ups than the kids. Rosario's is probably the best tex-mex in the downtown area. Count me in as a Los Barrios fan. Chris madrids is good bugers. Good recs have been mentioned. Look at menus before you come down so you're not going to places with the kids you prefer not too.

For the Alamo Bowl we stayed at the Valencia downtown. Acenar was in our hotel. I believe they are owned by the same people who own Rosarios. We ate at Rosarios the day before the game and ate at Acenar hours before the game.

I grew up in SA.

I recommend:

* Chris Madrids. Best burger I have ever eaten. And Chris Madrid is a Texas Ex
* Longhorn Cafe. The name is great but so are the burgers.
* Rosarios. Great food, great atmosphere.
* La Fogata. Great margaritas
* Jaime's. Personal favorite

There is a hidden Mexican food (more Mex than Tex-Mex) gem just north of 1604 on Blanco... It's next to a Double Daves... It's called Dulce Vida...

Excellent food... and great drinks.

Ask for Al (co-owner)... he'll treat you right.

Another vote for Azuca. Great food. Decent service. Could be a better atmosphere, but I bet on fri & sat it is pretty packed with the band

when i lived in s.a. i always liked josephine cafe for an affordable steak, ice cold lone star, and waitresses that called me "hon"

rosario's is very good

there is a place off mccullough near broadway, that had incredible carnitas. it was in a shack and later moved to a larger place around the corner? panchitos maybe? god i would kill for a plate of those right now. i lived in olmos park for a couple years and hit it almost every weekend. worth the drive from anywhere in town you're staying

The place that serves carnitas is La Calesa. We loved the place, but I sent someone there in March and they hated it.

I am going to second La Fogata. Great food, atmosphere, service, etc.

It's off Vance Jackson. From the Riverwalk, you will get there using I-10W and exit 565-C to Vance Jackson. If you hit the interchange with 410 and 10, you have gone too far.
The Link

I know the Panchitos downtown still serves a long list of tacos including carnitas. There are also many tacos of unknown meat, at least unknown to this gringo.
