Replacing old phone jacks

I've inherited a 1954 house. It still has 1954-style phone jacks. They have 4 little holes in them where the old phones plugged in with a cord with 4 little prongs.

I want to change them out for new jacks that new modular phones will clip into. Is this something I can do myself? I'm semi-handy, but I wasn't sure how hard a job this is.

Doable, or give the phone company a call?

Usually there are other more modern jacks somewhere in the house. If there is, just get a cordless phone with handset extensions. Otherwise, a converter ought to do the trick.

If I am ever in the Cash Cab I hope I can dial up this website as a lifeline. Yeesh, well done sleep.

You shouldn't even need a converter. Just get a new jack, disconnect the modular unit, and re-connect the wires to the new wall jack.

If you're lucky, the wire colors will even match up for you.

Just don't hold the bare wires and call yourself to figure out which ones are hot. They carry a little more current than you'd think.
