Replacement Windows

I'm planning to replace the windows in my house and have pretty much narrowed it down to two manufacturers, Home Craftsman and Simonton. Does anyone have experience with either of these brands? Does anyone have any other recommendations for what I should look at?
 
what kind of windows are you looking for? I replaced mine with Low-E glass energy efficient windows. I used McCoys on Burnet road. Even for the custom sized windows I had to order, they were very reasonable and I have been very happy with their performance and look.
 
Are you replacing them for cosmetic or energy efficiency reasons?

If it's for energy savings, the payback period for replacement windows is typically very long, like more than 20 years.
 
I'm replacing the windows for a few reasons. The house currently has the original single pane bare aluminum frame windows from when the house was built 50 years ago. A couple are cracked, the seals aren't very good, some of the latches are bad, we can't open them because there are no screens, and they're not very attractive. You mentioned a 20 year break even on energy savings, but you neglected the value that is added to the house. Energy savings, property value and livability are all reasons I'm having them replaced.

I should have mentioned that I'm in Dallas, so I can't take advantage of the Austin company.
 
Fair enough. If they're in that bad of shape that can be reason enough. Replacing otherwise good windows to improve efficiency is the upgrade that doesn't make financial sense in most cases.
 
I'm in the same boat; my windows are 52 years old, and so difficult to open I frequently turn the AC on when I'd prefer to open the windows.
 
Are you replacing them with aluminum? Several contractors I know (including the one that redid my 1950s house) use Don Young Company in Dallas. You might have to have a contractor order them..
 
Can you elaborate on your reasons for vinyl? I have been extremely leery of vinyl windows given the Texas weather - so much so that I haven't even seriously researched them. I would appreciate any insight you have.
