Repainting a deck

We just moved into a house and would like to repaint the backyard deck. I am planning on scraping off the old paint and then applying the new paint. Am I missing any steps? Do I need to waterprood too?

Thanks for any help.

If you're applying an epoxy type paint, I don't see why you'd have to waterproof it. The paint should be waterproof.

OTOH, I have bare wood on my deck. Due to my laziness, I never got around to waterproofing it. If I rented a power-washer and cleaned the wood, would it return to its original color (somewhat) so I could get a brown color instead of its current nasty grey color?

Rent a powerwasher from Home Depot and that will strip off all the old paint and wood fibers. Wait 24 hours, then stain the deck. You can get Behr stain that is stain and waterproof all in one. You'll probably have to do it every few years in Texas.

I finished my deck this summer and am trying to decide if I should paint it with some good outdoor paint or stain it. Seems painting it every 5 years or so would me much better than staining every year.

Any opinions?

Thanks for the tips. We have an old wooden house and the painted deck looks good painted to match the trim. I'll be sure to get the right paint. I like the idea of renting the power washer. I wasn't sure if they could strip paint.
