Rental cars question

I originally posted thi on the wrong board...sorry

So I am taking a road trip with some friends and we are thinking of renting a car. While looking into the details I noticed that the agreement states that unlimited miles are only allowed when traveling to neighboring states. Is there a way that they will know (provided we don't get in a wreck)?

Also, they charge $7 a day for every additional driver, Our plan was for all 5 of us to take shifts, but that makes it significantly more expensive. If we got in a wreck and someone not on the list was driving, are we going to be screwed?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

You should keep checking around!!! Never heard such crap about charging additional drivers.

No they wont know unless you get a ticket or wreck where you actually went, unless it has a navigation system with it. Most cars do not, some of the more upscale vehicles do.

Check with more rental firms.

We ran into the multi-state exclusion when we rented a car for the Rose Bowl road trip. One agency (Hertz I think, but may have been Avis) didn't have that language in their contract, so that's who we went with.... Just read the fine print. If your car breaks down, you get pulled over, or you have an accident and you're in a state that you're not authorized for, you could be in big trouble...
As for the multiple drivers, that's more of a risk worth thinking about taking... We actually discussed this with the agent who rented us a car (as to how they would know/track it.) We eventually decided that since the person on the contract would always be in the car, we were willing to take that risk.

Not every rental company has the neighboring state restriction. Only a couple do. I don't think that National, Budget, Dollar, or Avis have the restriction.

A friend of a friend rented a car with the neighboring state restriction. They had car problems. The dumbass called the rental company. They came out with a tow truck, took the car and said that they were SOL since they violated the contract. He is now banned from that rental company and they had to buy expensive last minute one-way plane tickets to get home.
