Renewing a cell phone plan?

I've had a Tmobile account for close to 4 years, Its been 2 years since they upgraded my phone. I'm month to month at the moment.

If I was a new customer, I could get the new phone I want, the Motorola A630, with the plan for free after rebate. As a new customer, they want $299 for it.

I called and tried to negotiate, the best I could get them to do is $299 with 1 month free, an increase in minutes (which I don't need) and $40 rebate. Final price would be $200.

So, new customer gets it for free, existing customer has to pay $200. When I called, I told them I would consider going to another company if they didn't give me a good deal, their response was "sorry, nothing we can do."

Anyone had any success stories? Any hints as to what would work?

Tried that, they didn't.

Besides, if you want to keep your number, you can't cancel, you have to get the new company to acquire the number which then cancels your account. Or so I'm told.

You might try going to a T-Mobile retail store. I have had better results with T-Mobile and other carriers going face to face than with phone support. I replaced my phones about a year ago in-store without any trouble, but it was a for a modest upgrade in phones. I was on a month-to-month then and still am now. I was anticipating having to sign a new agreement for at least 12 months, but they never brought it up. When I was with Sprint, they would upgrade phones only if I would sign a new contract.

If you are willing to deal with the slight hassle most carriers have about a 2 week "buyer's remorse period."

I would think you could port somewhere else and just take any plan/phone. About a week later, port back in as a new customer ("I ended up hating the service") and re-sign with a new customer price. Seems like it would work.
