Vince Young's No. 10 is being retired this Saturday and very well deserved and those that get to go to the game give an extra loud cheer for me. Good job Vince!

But let's also pause and remember our other great NC qbs.

1963 Duke Carlisle No. 11. Let us to a 11 - 0 record and big win over Navy in the Cotton Bowl. He had great leadership ability. He also played great defense for us during his time here and made the key interception against Baylor in 1963. He was the type of QB that could run a little and pass a little but mainly did what he had to do to beat you. After the Oklahoma game in 1963 a sportswriter said "He's the best quarterback in America but he won't make all conference."

1969 James Street No. 16 Great job at running the wishbone and led us to the NC in 1969 helping us beat Arkansas and Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl in 2 key games. Two fourth down passes in both games helped us win. A geat player.

1970 Eddie Phillips No. 14 He did a great job of continuing running the wishbone that year and who can forget his fourth down pass in the last few seconds that beat UCLA.

Of course we are familier with the VY heroics.

One of my professors today mentioned he has been at UT since his freshman year in 1962 which means hes been affiliated with UT in every NC. What a lucky man.

As I started reading this thread everything started looking wavy, I lost focussedness and I felt I was traveling back in time. When things cleared up, I was back in '63, then '69 and then finally '70.

Thanks, BiS, for the wonderful journey.

Three other notable QBs, led UT right to the edge, then fell short:

Mike Cotten '61
Marvin Kristynik '64
Marty Akins '75

1990 is a stretch, but if we beat Colorado, which we should have, then not change to the black shoes for the Cotton Bowl we win the National Championship. St. Peter!!!!!

I know it is a stretch, besides 2005 that is my favorite year!!!!!

I am also old enough to have seen all of those QBs play. Each was a great athlete, inspirational leader and fine person. But there is no reason to give them special props on the day Vince's number is retired.

Another one that didn't win the NC but was so close was Mike Cotton in 1961. It is too bad we played a bad game against TCU. If we would have kicked field goals when we had our chances I think we could have pulled that game out. He was one good qb. He wore number 12.

If it hadn't been for that 14 -14 tie with Rice in 1962 we would probably have Johnny Genung as another NC QB even though we lost the Cotton Bowl game.

Another shoo in would have been Bobby Layne if not for one loss. He was a great qb in the 40s for us. He led us to a 10 - 1 record in 1947 with the only blemish being a 13 - 14 loss to the great SMU team led by Doak Walker. We had a chance to win the game and were driving when we had a fourth and very short yardage. The great Cowboy Coach Tom Landry was given the call and had an open field and could easily have made the first down but alas he slip and fell and before he could react Bobby was tackled. With that win we would have been 11 - 0. We wouldn't have won the NC though because of the system then because the polls gave it to Michigan and/or Notre Dame and we couldn't have played them. Bobby was also a star pitcher for our baseball teams and later helped the Detroit Lions win 3 NFL championships before the Super Bowl was tought of.

Bill

You always make me feel old.

I remember all of those QB's and I also remember one of the saddest days of my life.
It was that TCU game in November of 1961. My mom bought my brother and myself brand new orange shirts and white pants to wear to that game. I cried worse than that OU kid I think when I got home after the loss.
I remember James Saxton was tearing them up until he got knocked out (literally) during the game. We went lifeless on offense after that. That 6-0 score still haunts me.
I would not wear orange to a game again until Mack Brown came to Texas.
