Rehearsal dinner spots?

Hey - my best friend is getting married in September here in Austin and wants spot for the rehearsal dinner. He is paying for the wedding himself so nothing too expensive, but still somewhat nice. Anyone have any ideas? Also, he asked me about the Oasis. I went there 2 years ago and the food was garbage. Is it better now?

My buddy had his at the Saltlick as well. We all enjoyed it very much. Another friend had hers at the Seranos on Red River. A little bit classier, but just as much fun.

We had ours at Nuevo Leon off east 6th St. They have a private room that holds 50-60. We had a great time.

Nuevo Leon sounds like a great idea. Good, cheap food, close to downtown, easy cabs.

We had ours at the County Line BBQ on 2222. It was fine, but we didn't have a bunch of heavy drinkers. Cabs from there downtown would be pricey.

Math, when I got married Matt's did not have a private room but they said they were looking into doing that. Have they done that?

If I remeber correctly, the do have a private room, but the night we did ours it was already rented out for something for Rick Perry.

They gave us a room that had a few other people a good ways away from us...it was fine cause it was cheaper and we live like po folk.

We rented one of those party boats on Lake Travis, picked up a couple of kegs, grilled burgers and got loaded. I'm told that it was a great rehearsal dinner. I don't really remember it.

Due to a last minute issue with the original spot, we did ours at Green Pastures. It was actually really nice, and close of bars, etc.

I would echo the sentiments about the Oasis. Mrs. AV's open bar company Christmas party (Clear Channel) is at the Oasis every couple of years, and so many people get uber-drunk and end up forking over $$$ for a cab to come pick them up out in the sticks.

He originally wanted to do Salt Lick but they were going to charge him about $4000 to do it there and he had a total of 40 guests coming to the dinner. $100 a person would be REALLY high for BBQ. I think he is going to do it at Z Tejas.

He can have it at my tailgate. Give me $20 per person and I'll take care of everything.

Of course, it depends on how much money you want to spend.

There are some good suggestions above.

My thoughts are more in line with keeping the location close to town (depending on where you live and where the event is).

Some of your guests may drink so I agree with the idea of having guests who either have a short drive back to a hotel or a very short drive to where they are staying.

My suggestions are Carmelo's or Castle Hill or maybe some of those places on 4th St.

Be careful, be safe, have a good time.

Resserve your place beforehand.

Lots of good suggestions. I always think something uniquely Austin is better than something more formal:

Z'Tejas
Threadgill's
Salt Lick
Matt's El Rancho

Of course, these establishments must have the ability to handle a large party and have a room available. That is often the hard part. So many cool restaurants in Austin, but not many that have the space usually assoicated with a rehearsal dinner.

We did the Hyatt riverboat fajita cruise. You can bring your own kegs and marg machine to cut on expenses. It was a great time and very unique.

Capital Cruises docks at the Hyatt and the hotel will cater a fajita dinner, among other choices.

In case you hadn't noticed, there's a river that runs through downtown. Sometimes there are boats that will take groups of people...

My buddy had his at Jaime's a few years back. It was a great time there. Not too expensive, but very festive.
