Refrigerator issue...

I was away from home and my kids call and report that the frig is making this sizzling sound and they can see a coil glowing red hot down near a vent inside th freezer compartment. They also reported a buring smell.

Anyhow, I come and get to looking at things and I can't find anything wrong. I clean all the dust from the back and around the components and plug it back in....no problems for the lst 24 hours.

On advice from a neighbor, I turned off the automatic ice maker as he thought it may have something to do with the defroster.

Thoughts...ideas...?

I wouldn't think the auto defrost and icemaker are like siamese twins joined at the hip or anything. I would also think that the auto defrost coils are sealed so that dust can't ignite on all models made in the last half century. I have no idea how your icemaker is configured, but the only thing I can think of is that is makes ice and them heats some wires to cut it. Refrigerator fires comprise less than 1/100th of 1% of the home fires reported in Oklahoma.

Actually, most home fires in Oklahoma are caused by Vern mowing the grass around the trailer with gasoline again.
