Is it possible to recharge the freon in a refrigerator without spending a jillion dollars on an electrician?

Sure, but you are only buying a temporary fix. Freon doesn't "wear out", it only leaks out.

Is your system dead? Sometimes a thorhough cleaning of the back and underneath can do wonders for cooling efficiency.

But the prior statemtn about leaking out is correct.

if your fridge ran while it was very low on freon your compressor is probably burned/ locked up. If you caught a small leak early - there might be hope.
