Referendum Options

I would really like to see a provision for a single referendum item in our national elections each cycle.

I get so tired of rehashing the same old battles about gay marriage, abortion etc.

Let's have a national popular vote determine these items.

We could have a vote that was binding for something like 3 election cycles. The nation decides our position relative to these two items and they are off the table for 12 years.

We could finally have a result that is reflective of a national compass rather than a few activist on either side dictating the agenda and politics. Or some court giving us some stilted reading of 'the law'.

other items that could be resolved this way:
-balanced budget amendment
-war powers act
-term limits

I just don't believe our current process of letting politicians hash it out gets us an actual result that resembles the consensus of American voters. Particularly with respect to the highly emotional issues.

Well it would certainly hasten the transition to direct democracy and the demise of our constitutional republic. We're nearly there; might as well go all in.

Really? So putting these issues up for a vote and letting people set our policies based on which side runs the best TV commercials is the answer? I don't think so.

And the War Powers Act? Most people don't know diddly-dick about the War Powers Act. You think they can decide whether it's good policy or not? I seriously doubt it.

California did exactly what the OP proposed, and the courts overturned the will of the people. So, I'm afraid it is a waste of time and money.
