Red Sox vote not to board plane for Japan, play final spring game

"Some of the promises have already been taken away, now this," Schilling said. "As far as the players are concerned, [withholding the coaches' bonuses] can't happen."

On one hand, it's a bush-league move on the part of MLB to not pay the money they promised the Boston staff....but if the players are this upset about it, why don't they just pony up some of their salary and get on the plane.

What's the league's stance on this? I can't believe they would just decide at the last second to renig on something they clearly promised. Perhaps I'm being naive, but it doesn't make any sense to me - I feel like there must be another side to this.

Red Sox Stipend Dispute Resolved

Appears that the dispute has been resolved. According to Schilling, he wasn't aware of any written agreement: "It was a verbal, on-the-phone conversation," said Schilling. "All the negotiations I was involved in were on the phone."

I do not think that it's a good idea for the players to pay the coaches, despite the fact that they could do it without feeling a dent in their wallets. But it would let MLB off the hook, and that cannot happen. MLB needs to honor the commitment it made to the entiren Bosox organization.

First off I am a huge Red Sox fan. But this was never about money. The Bosox staff has plenty of money. It was about the league promising to do something and then trying to back out of it. The Red Sox are as close an organization in baseball in my opinion. The players were not going to let the coaches that they love get screwed over.
