Recruiting Texas: 8 of the Top 15 players (247) went out of state

I'm really glad to hear our new guys talk about pride and loyalty in the state of Texas. Texas schools only got 46% of the top Texas players. That's just crazy. Where is the pride?

I hope these guys start a trend in the next couple of years' recruits.

It's always been a little tough at the top, but I do feel like it's gotten worse since A&M went to the SEC. It's funny that they talked about how it was going to send their recruiting into the next level, but I feel like it did a lot more for Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss than it did for them.

i don't want to insinuate that going out of state is bad form as a rule. each individual has to make his own decision. it just seems strange that a majority of the top guys would leave texas.

It all comes down to how well U.Texas is doing. If we are winning 9 or 10 games every year, 8 or 9 of the top-15 will be automatic to us, and no more than 2 or 3 will go out of state. Just win, and no aggy or SECSEC can do much damage to Texas players staying in Texas.

Its also telling that we had the #1 class in the Big 12.
But only the 11th in the nation.
The Big 12, being a power 5 conference, should at least sniff the top 5. This is just another sign to me that the Big 12 is moribund and its starting to hurt us (and OU for that matter).
I know recruiting rankings don't matter that much, but between UT and the other Big 12 / and Texas schools, we should be retaining more of the TX talent.

Was looking at the 247 list and the SEC picked up 5 out of the top 10 with A&M landing #10. I'm starting to think that all A&M did was open the door for the SEC into Texas; it didn't open the door of Texas to A&M. It might have closed it a bit because now the other SEC teams have higher visibility here than before.

Yep!

But we also know, from historical data, that Charlie's classes are often under-ranked because many players he picks are well-evaluated and not yet properly evaluated by the bandwagon recruiting services. It was pretty clear last year that our class was better (much better) than the A&M class which was ranked right below us (and actually higher-ranked than ours once Cherry, Devo, and Gilbert didn't make it in). There are reports out there that around 10 players from the 2015 class are already under the NFL radar, which is an indication that it was probably a top-5 class in talent. And it showed. Who knew that Connor, Davante, Charles, PJ, Hager, etc would be as good as they turned out to be?

Make no mistake about it - this class will also turn out to be better than they are ranked. There are players who we identified early like Chrismas-Giles, Fitzgerald, Lil'Jordan, Imade, etc who are way under-ranked right now. You will see it next fall. In fact, Charlie already mentioned Fitz as the dark horse of the class, but he is still a 3-star.

That was about how his recruits are often under-ranked. Then there is another aspect of Charlie's classes, which is that he picks players based on his own needs, and to fit the gaps in the roster properly. This is not easy to put a ranking on, but it makes the actual ranking of the class even better. More than talent evaluation, this was something Mack did very poorly in the last few years. The classes were not properly balanced for the rosters.

Always take the rankings of Charlie's classes with a pinch of salt. In my opinion, the 45 odd players from the 2015 and 2016 classes together are so solid in how few schollies are wasted, how talented they are across-the-board (despite not having too many top-50 players) and how well-balanced they are. For that reason, in my mind these two classes are as good as two #5 type classes pulled in by most other top-recruiter coaches, though both classes are ranked only around #10-12 each.

And I didn't even get into Charlie's record of coaching players up, as many people would like to see his 3rd year also to be convinced of his abilities in coaching up (though, in my opinion, there is enough good data on it already from Florida and Louisville).

I guess all those mediocre top 10 recruiting classes that Mack Brown signed didn't teach you anything. I've also got news for you, not every great player plays in the state of Texas. I like the fact that Coach Strong recruits nationally which is something Mack Brown never did. I hope that Coach Strong recruits more out of state players because a lot of the players in Texas are overrated imo.

And I forgot guys like Collin Johnson, who is vastly under-rated. He was in the top-100 and was expected to move into the 5-star territory based on his junior film (by the way, watch it; it will shock you how good he is, with that 6-5 height, unbelievable catch radius and speed!). He got injured in his senior year and his ranking dropped. Then there are others like Wilbon who are under-ranked too.

It's amazing how many under-ranked players are in this class. There isn't a single player that I would give away. For contrast, in most Mack classes in the top-5, though there would be 6 or 7 top-100 players, there would be easily 5 or 6 guys that we would already know to be very doubtful to become all that good in college (who were offered too early but had had pretty poor senior seasons). I don't believe anybody in this class had a terribly poor senior season, except perhaps Reggie, who had a slightly worse senior year than his junior year, though not bad.

Haha. I typed "40 odd players" and then realized it was over 45. But yeah, now it looks like we have been recruiting odd players :)

Actually these guys must be odd, for them to be signing up to play for a coach that has had back to back losing seasons. Probably the only coach ever to pull in two top-10 classes in a row after losing seasons!
